What is it with Low Mileage cars?
Discussion
How can you have eg a twenty year old car with less than 18,000 genuine miles from new?
The bit that I don't get is how can a person resist just jumping in the car and pootling to the corner shop just to cheer themselves up? How can you keep yourself out of something you absoultely find a joy to drive?
The noise, the feel, the response. Too much to resist.
Insurance, the cost of running, buying when your heart's not in it, liking the idea of a car but actually liking the car itself. Loads of reasons but whatever, I'd be willing to be that these cars aren't owned by proper petrolheads.
As you say there's too much temptation for weak-minded people like us

Very easily done.
My Lotus has 20k on the clock, I bought with 10k on 14 years ago. In that time I've spent 1 year living in the middle east, 18 months living in the US, 31/2 yrs living in India & 2 years living in Equtorial Guinea. When I've been in the UK, I've spent long periods of time in Turkey, Tunisia & Egypt. So all told I've probably spent only 5 years in the country. Now the car is a convertabile & is only really used in good weather so at best thats only a 1/3 of the time, so say 2 years. I have the choice of 3 cars currently so effectively reduce that further.
So out of 14 years of ownership the amount of time I could actually use it is probably only a year, & 10k miles in a year is about average.

Mmmm...This is interesting, I know that I am using my 993 less and less because of work, travel, weather and the roads in this country. Looking at my last few MOT`s, this is all that I have covered...
2005-2006 1,114 Miles
2004-2005 2,083 Miles
2003-2004 2,327 Miles
2002-2003 1,888 Miles
2001-2002 4,781 Miles
Considering how much I spend on the car, is it really worth it?

As a weekend toy, my car probably gets used on average once every two weeks. This year for various reasons it's been a lot less than that. Working out annual depreciation/number of times used =
every time it comes out of the garage. Much as I'd love to upgrade to something bigger/shinier/faster, this equation deters me from doing it.

maybe you'd be better off joining a club like ecurie or something?
the guy I bought mine from did less than 2k miles in the 12 months prior to me buying it, I thought a car that had been a garage queen would be a better buy since my motorbike is the same (and its for sale in the classifieds www.pistonheads.com/sales/104777.h if anyone is interested) as I thought it would be better looked after etc.
how wrong was I!
hope the missus doesnt see this but ive spent about 6 grand in a year replacing stuff.
next porsche I buy will be on condition, regardless of miles and ill be steering clear of the cars that aint used regularly.

When the bike goes I presume you'll have to change your name to PorscheGary...
When I ran my Porsche as my only car I did around 10-12K miles in it each year. One year into owning my most recent Porsche I got a "shopping" car. Since then my mileage has fallen to about 4K miles per year. So my car is four years old and has only done 23K miles. I'm actually *trying* to use it a bit more...
Thing is my commute is either done on my bike or in the shopping car...
The wife uses her TVR even less. The only mileage its done all this last year has been to and from the garage to get it fixed.

I only now use my 996TT once every couple of weeks, due to moving jobs & being in London and having a family car thats used at weekends.
I will probably sell it. While I can afford to keep it, I just cannot justify keeping a car like this for driving 20 miles a month in. Its just a complete waste of a good car !

Hmm, I put 16000 km on the 928 since I bought it last November (put winter tires on it the week I bought it), and 8000 km on the Seven in the past six weeks. I hope to do another 1000 the coming weekend - there's no snow on the passes yet!

I only use my TT now about once a month. maybe 5-10 miles.....
I wont take it anywhere I dont know I can leave it in a safe place.
I have another car and loads of motorcycles I use instead.
Really?............that's a thought. Maybe when my 997GT3 arrives I should pay for it then leave it at the OPC - maybe even pay him to keep it for me. Then I'll go and drive it 100yds round their compound - but only once every leap year mind!I wont take it anywhere I dont know I can leave it in a safe place.

My message across the land:
" Drive your lovely autombile, I say, drive, and realise that your dream lives in your garage!"
Do not keep it under lock and key, let the seat cradle you as you hear the hum of a few hundred horses lazily push you at 30mph.
No finer way to go and get you Sherbert Dip at the Pic N Mix and then safely home again.
