Sorry guys i know this has been done before but want advice on the above.

Have a 2001 GT3 kitted 996 which i've had for about 15 months, not bored with car but gf's kids are getting bigger and with the booster seat issue the youngest has a problem with the back of the front seats.

So here is my problem, would look to do some trackdays next year but need four good seats for her kids, standard M3 doesn't do it for me and just been to see an 04 CSL which is probably about the same price as mine.

Love the sound of the CSL but don't love the 155mph limit or the varying reports on bhp, 0-60 times etc.

I know DMS do a delimit and upgrade but no idea on top speed after this.

Has anyone had both at the same time ? or had the upgrade ?

Comments please guys. Do i do it ?

drop Carrera2 a mail - he did the switch recently so can give you an honest opinion.

And now the serious answer is out of the way, perhaps this link may help: http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0

I say do it. My brother has one and its a fantastic car, and an equal for the GT3 (if you can get over the sequential gearbox) space, pace, noise but it does ride HARD and the seats aren't the most comfortable.

Also many cars have been delimited, and I would guess the 0-60 to be sub 5 seconds.

Also the 155 limit is utter guff. I had my std M3 over 170 several times (GPS)

Agreed the 155 limit is rubbish as I used to get mine way over that and top speed was then just down to power and aerodynamics. Nothing to do with a limiter.

CSL would be way more fun than a standard Carrera as well.

Thanks guys, i'm aware of the BMW issue's with the driver's as had 325ci sport coupe before and an E30 M3. I always indicate and always let people out when i can.

That Sky comment about BMW's being smug cars is correct though but i guess there is nothing you can do about it.

Saw somewhere that CSL was 4.4 0-60 and then I saw 5.2. Just love the sound, nicer then the cooking 996 I guess.

I think 4.4 is very optimistic. But it's markedly faster than the standard M3.

My CSL was built from the factory without a speed limiter and I reached an indicated 193mph on germany's finest autobahns. It will reach 60mph in around 4.6 seconds and 100mph in the early 10s. It won't blow your socks off but neither is it slow.

Well a CSL is much closer to a GT3 than your car, that I can tell you for nothing.

I have owned 2 M3's and currently have a GT3 and the difference is huge. The GT3 is quicker than the M3 and has a level of feel the M3 can not get close to, but having said that the CSL is a whole load closer to a GT3 and a very special car with an engine (and sound) to die for. If you need the space the CSL is the better bet but don't think for 1 moment (and I am not suggesting you are) that a kitted 996 is a GT3, the difference is MASSIVE! The engine in the GT3 is what makes the car special. Add to that an incredible helm from which to steer it from and you have a very special 996, very different to a normal 996.

Around a track their is not much in it and on a bumpy road the CSL is probably a little more pliant and slightly quicker. However, get the GT3 on a smooth road and it will satisfy you more than the CSL in my opinion just form the feedback you get from the steering, something the CSL is behind the GT3 on. Harder to drive on the limit, no quicker most of the time either, but I think the GT3 for me is better. Both are stunning cars and we are talking about levels of perfection here and what works for one may not for the other.

If it was your car or a CSL I would choose the CSL without hesitation!

Sounds good enough for me, CSL it is then.

By the way HM i was behind a silver GT3 last week and it was about 2 inches lower then mine with a sound not unlike the devil himself.

Under no illusions on the 996 front, couldn't get the GT3 cos of her kids last time so GT3 kit was compromise then !

Thanks guys.

i have owned both. a csl and 2004 gt3. i love csl's .there is no better sports saloon, but thats what it is a saloon, the gt3 is a little quicker to a ton but above that the gt3 is in a different league, and yes boringly it is a porsche but when you have that level of performance why not flaunt it. most people dont know a csl from a standard m3,whether this is good or bad is personal opinion.you dont feel you have anything to prove in a gt3 tho.i would take the csl over a standard 996 carrera tho , anyday.its always best to have the most cooking version of whatever it is you drive if you have the means.there are lots of m3s and carreras so be different, they are worth the extra costs,no doubt about it. csl better everyday but as driving machine cant touch gt3.

what difference does a 155mph limiter or the 0-60 time make? rolleyes

if you just want to impress people in the pub then the porsche is probably best...

I suspect he's just wondering how fast the car might be... it's a fair enough question?

As regards de-limiting and performance there would be no real change in acceleration, obviously top end will increase but not to as much as 193mph as someone suggested, sure the speedo may have read this but its out, maybe 180 max MAYBE, BUT NO MORE , the drag and gearing would prevent more than this. If it came from factory to someone with a racing license it may already be derisricted as mine was otherwise BMW will do it for approx £500.Also check warranty work,if not done may well need new diff as notorious for this, ive had x2,would be expensive if not covered.Engine wise pretty reliable, clutch can take a beating with smg2 box on full upshift all the time and slippage after hard use is normal if a tad annoying.

The 155mph and 0-60 time was a concern as I didn't want a car that was only a tenth quicker to 60 than a standard M3 but paying 10k more and if i want to attend a Vmax 155mph won't really do it.

Does that sound a fair enough question Benno ?

If i wanted bragging rights down the pub i'd have bought the GT3 and refused to take her kids to school and be a real man wouldn't i.

The csl is designed to be faster round a track, its been subtly designed to offer a lower centre of gravity and lower weight. 0-60 is just a straight line speed measurement, to 60 both cars will be similar as CSL only has an extra 30bhp and a bit less weight - but fundamentally same gearing, tyre contact patch etc.

Vmax is just gunning a car down a straight piece of Tarmac, you wont do especially well in a CSL as its only a 3.2 with 360bhp. Again not really what car is designed for.

thinking about it, you probably should take a look at the new VXR500 Monaro if you want good 0-60 and want to go to things like VMAX.

A supercharged 5.7L would whoop a CSL on both of these activities

CSL will do what you need it to do - it's as close to the GT3 as you can get with 4 seats - there is a suprising amount of room in the back (more than a standard M3), and a great boot - probably the most practical performance option you could get.... All IMHO of course thumbup
