Top end / gearbox rebuild
Discussion
Lets say, hypothetically, that you were looking at a 1984 3.2 carrera with 100k on the clock which hadn't had the top end rebuilt. What sort of ballpark figure would you say you'd be looking at to have the top end, and potentially the gearbox rebuilt? (I gather early gearboxes aren't as strong as the G50 ones)
www.jzmachtech.com/shells/service_index.php has some fixed prices, which will vary according to what they find when they open up the engine.
I think prices vary, but have you established that it does need an top end rebuild? You would need a formal compression test, but you can open the oil filler and see if it breathes heavily or is it smoking on start up for a pro-longed period of time, more than a minute? The topend rebuild of any car is dependent on how it was run in initially from new, how regular it's been serviced and it's general use as in stop / start journeys or long journeys....it's always possible it will go a lot more than 100K. Prices on gearbox rebuilds vary a lot depending on how much they need to do.
No, I've just seen one advertised, and there's no mention of a rebuild, so i was just musing over say 10k for a minter, less the 2 potential worst hits to the wallet.
However, at 5k for a top end (?!?!?!) I might have to offer to take the car off his hands and charge him 500 quid for doing so!
I know I could just google this, but that's the point of forums isn't it....? Do you know anyone that produces top end rebuild kits for 3.2 engines? I know a rover V8 rebuild kit's about 800 quid....

Firstly I'm afraid no 911 owner will take you very seriously if you go to buy his car saying its not had a top end rebuild so I want 2-5k off the price, fact is a car thats had the top end isn't technically worth any more than a car that hasn't, its just easier to sell, forget whether its been done just check the car over and make an offer based on that, the only time you will get anywhere by bidding low because of a problem is if the problem is actually there at the time, eg it needs a new gearbox so bid accordingly.
And a good 3.2 at 10k is cheap so he may have adjusted the price already.
