Just had a 60k service. Car fine other than:

Surface rust on front discs, and pads 60% worn. Suggest replace the lot, at a cost of £700 odd

Tyres also close, and suggests full new set with 4 wheel alignment, at a cost of £924

Politely declined both of his offers. But why do they try? I assume there are some people out there who actually just say yes and pay these ridiculous prices?!

They try because the majority of punters will say yes.

Yep. I probably let the OPC do too much - but its Northway Porsche for discs/pads etc and Micheldever for tyres/alignment for me...

Hi, I'm in the process of purchasing a Cayman S. Please excuse my ignorance but can you take the car to a non Porsche centre to get the front disc and pads replaced without effecting the warrenty.
thanks

Yep - Kwikfit will be doing my tyres (or someone like that)

And VGA in Vauxhall will get my disk and pad work. But seeing as i have 40% of the pads left, im not too worried yet

You've got me thinking about servicing costs for my forthcoming Cayman S. I was quoted £360 for the first service at 20k and £560 at 40k. I’m not stupid and was aware that other “bells and whistles” will be probably attached. To keep costs to a sensible level what other work would you take elsewhere. As for Tyres the OPC quoted circa £100 more than I get at a reputable tyre specialist.
Thanks for any advice.
Francis.

Kwikfit have a price match promise thing going on which I found made them very cheap for two new rears on my C4S. (I did of course take £30 off the lowest price I had been quoted elsewhere!!)

My local one also treated my car and wheels with the utmost respect, the manager himself insisting that he would do them personally and inviting me to watch the process and check the rims for damage both before and after the event.

A bit disconcerting to have all the other staff hanging about and taking photos tho' !

Oh and praise the lord for PSM - I completely forgot about the waxy stuff that new tyres are covered with!!

generally - i think the rule of thumb is any 'consumable' take to a good indy..

So things like tyres, brakes, clutch etc..

No problems. They don't ask to see any supporting paperwork from other quotes either - hence the "slight" adjustment !!

I *think* I paid around £600 for a full set of 18" Conti SportContact N2's recently. I know the rears were £159 ea fitted and balanced with new valves, the fronts were £120 ish ea.

Francis F - If you are looking for a good indy in the North East I would recommend Redline Racing on the Teesside Industrial Estate between Thornaby and Ingelby Barwick they prepare cars for the Porsche Carrera Cup. They did a 48K service on my Boxster recently.

Never. I have heard of the odd person who has had a negative experience...but considering the truly vast number of cars and performance cars that go through there I expect its a very low percentage. I've always been happy - so far - touch wood etc etc

What irritates me about these places (OPCs in the UK)is the uninformed willingness to waste your money. eg Boxster S - ( There is a creaking noise from the hood - Its out of warranty sir - Yes but can you fix it - Bring it back in next week when we arent so busy, leave it with us for a couple of days and we'll strip the hood frame down and check it out - No thanks.) An OPC in Germany subsequently fixed the problem for me in 5 minutes and didnt even charge. Apparently its common in cold weather.

Fundamentally i think that it is perceived as a luxury product in UK but its a sports product in Germany. The attitude is totally different.
