BOXTER roof rattles
Discussion
I've seen people on here talking about this before.
Our Boxter S has this rattle, seems to come from around the handle but it's definatelly shut and the car is under two years old.
Any ideas on curing this?
My last one didn't so much...my current one does. The whole goddamn roof is very slightly moving against the stiffer chassis parts of the car....
I just used the lubricant they use at services all over every part of the roof mechanism and seals I could find.
It doesn't stop the movement...it just makes it quiet(er).
Errr....they all do that sir....errr.

Hmmmn.
I'll add to that I know a bloke who was really put out at the level of rattle. Took it back to the dealer and got them to put it right.
I suspect they just did what I do with the lubricant...but from your descrption maybe what you are experiencing is worse than I'm used to (more like what happened to the bloke...). If you are genuinely peed off with it I'd insist on taking a service representative out for a drive and asking them if that level of noise is normal.
AFN were happy to do this with me when I was annoyed with a rattle...
Alternatively if you are anywhere near me you're welcome to come out for a spin (not literally) with me to listen to my roof - and see if its any worse.

Unconvinced that a little oil will cure, the noise is to metalic.
Will give it a go though and take it from there.
Hampshire I'm afraid...so a bit of a distance.
Hmmmn. Time to pop around to the dealers and just ask them if this is normal. Ask for a test drive in one of the newer cars and see if it does it. If it doesn't - you've got a rock solid case for having them do something about it..
Over two years old though you may need to contribute to the process...unless your warranty is still good.
I've heard a rattle / clunking in early 2.5 cars. This turned out to be a board of some kind, which lives under the carpet. It can go just a tiny bit out of shape so that it leaves a small gap between the board and the metal boot floor. This can then cause a rattly clunking noise over rough surfaces.
It's easy to check, just open the rear boot lid and give the centre of the boot floor a bit of a bang with your hand and you should be able to reproduce the noise. If there is no noise forget it. If the noise is there you can put a fairly heavy bag on it and go for a test drive to see if the noise goes. If so then the next step is to try and fix it for good. A bit of thin foam between the plank and metal boot floor does the trick, but you need to take all the carpet popers out to get to it.
