adive needed!!!.....Starting Squeal noise
Discussion
Ive just purchased a 996 c4 cab(2000)from an independant specialist, some 120miles from where I live (southeast kent)
Ive got this weird noise on start up which seems very much like a belt slipping, does it for about 2-3 seconds as it fires up and sometimes dosnt do it at all. Has anyone had a similar problem? as, if its just a quick fix I'll get it into the local specialist (paragon) rather than taking the 240 mile return trip back to finley Gorham.

Is it a harsh screech? My old Boxster made that noise occasionally and it turned out the starter motor needed cleaning out. If you've only just picked the car up I would ring the supplier and ask what they think. They may not be aware of the problem if it's intermittent and might resolve it for you.

My '99 996 did that last Winter (intermittently). It stopped making the sound after a few weeks, before I had a chance to replace the starter motor! Hasn't recurred since - but Winter's just around the corner again. I'll see what happens.

is your AMP meter lower when it occurs and picks up to a normal charge when it stops?
Mine does this as its a belt from time to time, especially if its been raining hard, I think the belt slips for about 10 secs, no squeel, but the amp charge is low, then picks up, slight squeel for 1 sec then normal.

Call the dealer up and get him to talk through the fault and diagnose it for you. That`s what dealers are there for, to support any queries you have with a new purchase.
Failing that: if it`s the starter that`s squealing it will tend to do it once you have turned the key back ie: stopped using the starter and the unit free spins for a while whilst not under load. A squealing starter tends to lower in tone slightly as the starter slows down.
A loose belt will tend to squeal until it gets grip, often reving the engine up will "clear" a slipping belt. A slipping belt usually lasts longer than a couple of seconds though. A squealing belt tends to have a more constant tone providing the engine is not revved.
Hope that helps
