The first Virgin of PCM does not work with Orange (as I foun out as I am an organge customer). Fine for Vodafone and O2. I bought a pre-pay Vodafone sim and it works fine........I don't use it often and divert mobile for long journeys.

lol @Irish. I have mornings like that too.

- im trying to get to grips with the PCM in my 996 as well chap. From what ive gathered there are two main versions of PCM, PCM-1 and PCM-2 up to model year (i think - someone correct me) 2004 its PCM-1, and pre 02 facelift its 8-bit, 16-bit thereafter. The version you have *i think* will be PCM-1 8 bit. The latter will be relevant when you try to upgrade the sat nav maps to the latest version (im currently trying to source the correct CD from flea-bay for my version of PCM, as i only have 2000 - 2002 maps in mine).

With regard to the phone - try searching on here for "PCM" & "Mobile", but the gist of the information seems to be that PCM-1 requires either Vodafone or 02 (BT-Cellnet) as they work on the correct frequency for it - if i remember rightly Vodafone and O2 work on 900 mhz and Orange etc are 1300 ? (im not sure on the other figure - but 900 is the one you want).

Im using a vodafone pay as you go SIM in mine (an MY02 996) at the moment and its working fine - there is of course the issue of having to put your mobile on divert to the PAYG sim in the car etc, but thats been covered at length on here.

Hope this helps.

Have you checked the obvious - are you putting the SIM card in the right way round ?, is the sat nav and radio all working correctly (it isnt after the code following a battery replacement or something) etc.

Also where did you buy the car ?, id consider asking the previous owner (get the name and address off the V5 and phone them) whether the PCM was working when they had it, and which network they were using it with.

Are you using a credit card sized sim or the adapter card for the small sim? I know that the adpater cards are dodgy sometimes.... If you need to source a new adapter card, PM me....

and no offence intended, but are you 100% sure the PCM has the phone module init - they look identical and will have the phone button regardless of whether the phone module is present

they were two separate options, 1. PCM satnav 2. phone module

(I only ask as I have sat in a car where the dealer claimed it had the phone but it didn't)

In PCM (version 1 at least; that's the one that has only 6 keys for the radio stations and not a full numeric key pad) the phone was always included and not an option on top of the navigation (as with the 997). In case the PCM let's you make emergency calls then there is also a phone module in it. Talk to the seller, Dr S

hmmm are you sure? PCM2 in a 996 defo has phone module as a £520 option on top of the £1650 for PCM, it will not work w/o it (might do for only emergency calls though not sure how as it won't have the electronics or the 4 point aerial on the windscreen).

I have not looked at PCM1 as I specifically want a later 996 so it has PCM2 instead, but would be amazed if Porsche reduced the spec between MY02 and MY03 such that something that was std on PCM1 was a cost option on PCM2. As I say I find this highly unlikely but do not know for sure.

When I bought my Boxster S many years ago it had PCM1 and the phone was integrated by default IIRC. Could easily be that this has been changed already with PCM2. Also it's not really reducing spec if you break up a bundle and make the components available individually. I guess too many people were not bothered with having a second SIM for the integrated phone and makeing sure it always works properly when using the car.

In my 997S I do have the navigation without phone and it's impossible to do even only emergency calls. None of the relevant technical kit is actually installed.

there shouldn't be a problem with the credit size sim as it came out of a new pre pay pack and when a orange sim is inserted all the functions are there it just wont select orange as a network so the unit is fine every other network said to check sim
