You have to remember there is next to no performance difference between a 3.0/3.3 turbo and a 964 c2.

A turbo 2 is fast though!

I think you should buy one just like this.
If it turns out not to be quite fast enough then you can always get some clever people to have a tinker in the boot; do a search on this sub-forum and you'll find all the info you need.

I've had a 964 C4 & 964 RS and they were both great cars, far better than the 3.2 carreras that I've driven...and sound better too.

Ha ha, but at least they aren't made from rice paper as the coxster is..........I had a nice look underneath one the other day, and haven't smiled so much in ages.

Is that an ironic remark?

Think it was just a jealous comment from someone who owns 2 Porsche's with the lady size engines

Hi Guys
First of all who is the tosser with the coxter?
Does he have anything constructive to say?
Anyway all forums have them.
I would have to say the 930 and the 965 are great cars with similar power and it would be a tough call for me having owned both.
Don't agree with a c2 or c4 been as quick as a 930 what ever anyone claims a Turbo on boost is awesome!
The 965 is an easier vehicle to drive as not quite as brutal as the 930 when she spools up and obviously has coil spring suspension/ABS/Power steering etc, still a hand full though!
The 930 in my view is more a purist 911 Turbo and is probably more iconic and may well be worth more in years to come.
One other point the 965 is more expensive when things go wrong and are more prone to leaks.

Personel preference at the end of the day like a lot of these debates.
With a 20k budget you will get a better 930 than 965 unless you want to sit on the left.
Hope this helps.

Ed

Not quite sure why you think the 965 is more prone to leaks? Most people do't realise howmuch development went in to the 965 engine over and above the 930. The 930 sure is an icon, but no way would I have one over a 965.

Everyone to their own mate.

964=wank? I have not seen this calculation before, however, if it be true, one can only postulate that 986=MASSIVEwank (being the higher number and all that). Makes sense to me, at least.

Anyway, it’s all down to personal taste, isn’t it.

As for the 930 being compared to the 964C2/4 – no contest. The 930 is far more rapid than both in most situations (apart from the wet, where the C4 comes to life!)

NDT – my advice (to be taken with a pinch of salt) would be do your research (as you have started to do) and drive as many as you can and buy the best you can afford. My money would be on a 1989 930 with the 5 speed box tho, just lovely and classic in the details.

Whatever happens, have fun and beware of lift-off oversteer! 

Oh dear, it was a throw away comment..However apart from the speacialist models the 964 is generally not considerd porsches gtreatest moment. They sound nice ,but they are very heavy and cost a lot to maintain.I do know however that people do love their cars,i know i do and i dont really want to offend peoples choice of cars.If i have i am sorry. As for mr wildoliver"coxster?ladies engine?"be original man,all this hinting will not do you any good,If you are gay fine, get yourself a nice rentboy and be happy.

One can only imagine Dr Erroneous has neiter driven nor owned a 964.

And for this reason should refrain from answering!

Likewise I possibly made a mistake with my comment, it wasn't based on having driven a 930, only on the performance figures (HP, 0-60 and top speed) which are very similar to 964.

In bone stock form the 930 is laggy so I guess there isn't much in it, the old 3LDZ turbo is crap and most driven 930's have had this swapped out for either a K27/11 or hybrid unit which basically transforms the power delivery, then with a 1bar spring you are up in the mid/high 300bhp region with FAR less lag, and you'll make mincemeat out of 964C2's, if you turn the spanners yourself you can do this for around £1000.
The 930 is quite a bit lighter than a 964T2 but has the old torsion bar suspension as opposed to coil overs and unless you get an 89 930 you've got 4 gears instead of 5, mine is a 4 speed and still has torsion bars but it works perfectly fine for me and I’m at 497bhp and 617nm, the car feels planted (albeit the back end lights up occasionally) and the 4 speed box is fine, virtually no lag between shifts and it just goes on and on in 4th which red lines at around 195mph, not that I’ve been there! Lost my nerve at 180.
All in all I would go for a 930, buy cheap and spend the extra having some mods done, the original classic Icon that can still mix it with the big boys

Jbl you have me really thinking now, what are they like to drive? Are they involving, or do they push over in to tiring?

Also whats reliability like? I'm not talking engine failure etc, I'm talking the stupid little things like lights packing up due to old wiring etc.

4 speed doesn't bother me, basically if they aren't hard to tune it would seriously tempt me as a replacement for mine.
