Hi guys.

Having bought the 993 Carrera 2, I intend to annoy the wife by doning a lot of valetting.

Obviously this will cut into time allocated for other menial tasks.

Zymol will come into play on the exterior and interior.

However the engine bay is a little, well, sordid.

The fan is oily to an extent as is the rest of the bay.

I'm tempted to go at it with GUNK and the pressure washer, covering the ignition first of course, but what else should I be careful of?

Cheers,

Andrew Dryburgh.

Haha.

Well the ladies like a bit of rough, including Mrs. Vesuvius 996...

Very droll.

Anyway.

No offence meant!

No, I like a really clean car.

I'm genuinely asking what else should I be careful not to get wet.

First thing, don't dream of posting 993 topics on here...you get the pointless cliched response you just encountered!

I have cleaned 993 engine bays using gunk on a rag and then washed of with water and a sponge...I wouldn't use a pressure wash...water gets in everywhere and could lead to misfire and electrical probs, which are easily avoided. Have fun!

It does seem (from my limited time spent on here) as if any thread about 993s will in the first 5 replies inevitably include references to:

(a) beards

(b) horse brasses

(c) real ale

Once you realise that it's just the RMS boys engaging in a bit of purchase-justification to make themselves feel better about their own water-cooled mega-depreciating offerings, you learn to shrug it off

I can understand the desire to make the exterior and even interior of the car look good - but why the engine bay!? It's not like anyone other is going to see it! confused Life is just too short to worry about getting that clean! biglaugh

phone Hello, is that the cop I wish to report my friend missing.

Yes.

Yes.

He's Italian.

Yes.

Earlier today.

Yes.

In his thirties.

Of course I suspect foul play. There's a thread on 993 cleaning and he's nowhere to be seen.

Well it stems from the hot oil smell that permeates from the engine when hot, and moreso that drifts into the cabin after a hard run.

I accepted it from earlier cars like the 912, but reckon cleaning it could cure the prob!!

Clean engine bays are lick Gunk/jizer, a pressure washer some plastic bags and something like back to black are the main ingredients... And utosol if you're really sad.

Only clean the engine when it's cool... Rapid changes in temp are not good, jizer is flammable.

Bag up the electrics and any intakes, tieing off with a laggy band or string and then give the engine a good going over with gunk and a brush. Once you've loosened the majority of the crap, pressure wash it off (not too close with the washer) Rinse and repeat (well I do drive a 996 cab) till it looks clean.

When it's dried give the plastic bits a back to blacking and then go mad with the Autosol if you're feeling energetic.

I'm sure some of the 993 boys will be along soon to give you specific areas to avoid.

This thread rather got off on the wrong foot. Heh heh. It's just a good job Nervous is in Monaco.... otherwise we'd have a major diplomatic incident on our hands....hehe

On a serious note, take care to bag up electical connectors and don't get water in the air intakes as the engine may suck in water on startup - not in any way shape or form a good situation.

Oh, and mine's a pint of Spitfire beer

Clears off to check coolant level and RMS for leaks**

You might want to check the lower valve cover gaskets first - if they are weeping they tend to drip oil onto the heat exchangers, leading to oil smoke in the cabin (anything form a tinge of a faint smell to "where the hell did the dashboard go?".

And the Italian they are referring to is the fastidious owner of a Guards Red 993RS and is out on the beers with me this weekend... most people daren't mention any kind of cleaning products in this forum, especially not in the same title as "993" hehe

Mind you, i think i still have the 993 anorak honours... paperbag
