I've recently purchased a Polar Silver 993 (few weeks ago) and I'm not into big modifications and like to keep the car as standard as possible, but was wondering about the merits of a K&N air filter? I know it's an item for life that can be cleaned etc. and I like that, but is there really any BHP benefit? My car also has the factory option for the Porsche Sports Airbox when it was produced....I'd assume it would be OK with that as well?

This has been done to death on Rennlist and the concensus is:
if you're doing race work and rebuilding the engine frequently then go ahead and geta cup airbox and a K&N
if you're driving on the road and want to maximise your performance you'll be very hard pushed to beat the standard Porsche paper filter, and it's so cheap you can simple replace it twice as often as you're supposed to (12k miles instead of 24k) and iit'll still work better and cost less than a K&N.

Oh, and if you decide you are going to abandon the paper filter and go aftermarket, the concensus is that BMC are better for our old air cooled legends than K&N...

I'm sure xmas will grant your every wish ... (sorry, gratuitous use of xmas smiley there to get everyone into the spirit nice and early - my word, it's still October and I saw Christmas Puddings in Tesco the other day yikes)
