For someone buying his first-ever 911.

Important; resale value---performance.

Unimportant; equipment----mpg----running costs---insurance---anything else really!

Budget; £40,000 cash private. Any year car.

Input appreciated. Ta.

seems odd that your most important requirements are resale first, performance second...

surely you want a car your going to enjoy? rather than one you need to keep locked up in a padded garage for fear of losing precious value?

A perfect, original 72/73 911 2.4S or a 996 GT3

Firstly, it's not for me. I have just bought a barely run-in BMW M3 CSL which is going nowhere, as it is fantastic.

Secondly, don't expect everyone to have the same requirements for a car as you do!
The guy in question has lost an absolute fortune in resale value on his last 10 cars, is now semi-retired and resale value IS now important to him.
Which is fair enough, as far as i am concerned.

I have told him to get a leggy 996 turbo, they will shortly be getting close to his budget i would think.

Agree with that.

964RS might be a bit too hard core for an old bloke.

You'd be in 993RS territory for £40k ... Although you'll probably find it hard to ferrit one out , you won't loose money on em.

Possibly too weak on power as well.
He is looking for more than 250-260 bhp.

(He is 39 by the way).

agree entirely...not an everyday useage proposition though. 996 C4S is better in that respect but the short term depreciation might be steeper than anticipated...Porsche chasing the 'volume' market perhaps!

Perhaps I read your original post wrong..

A 996 Turbo will depreciate - i read it as looking for something that wont lose a penny... if he's okay with 'some' depreciation thats a completely different story...

Of course, when it comes to cost over a year, getting a depreciate-proof 100k 996 turbo could work out costlier if it needs lots doing in the year...

the key is to buy clever...

Something not right about that car. They were never badged 'Turbo 4' as this one is at the back. Should be badged as only 'Turbo'.

Also what's Mirage Silver? Never heard that as a Porsche colour. In the photo looks like a very light brown, maybe it's had a respray.

Mirage certainly is a Porsche colour, but very rare you ever see a car in it.

It's almost champagne like - a sort of gold/silver mix it always looked to me.

I suppose just because the badge is wrong could still actually mean it's just the badge that is wrong! As always buyer beware whatever you look to buy.....
