A while ago i posted a thread regarding a rattle from the front of my Boxster it appeared after about 15-20 mins of starting up.Little bumps will do it cats eyes, sleeping policemen, ripples etc and most of the time it will stop when i apply the brakes.I've had anti rattle plates for the brake pads fitted from the S,new lower arm with the balljoint fitted, drop link disconected to see if that did it and guess what, not a jot of differancegrumpy it seems to happen when i go over bumps on the drivers side but the noise seems to come from that area poss to the middle and also if i rock the car from outside i can make a noise similar but like theres something rocking/rolling around, nobody can find it any ideas would be appreciatedconfused
ps; its bloody annoying

Hi all

not sure if this helps but I had blitz of rattles in my 996 the other day and the primary culprit which sounded like a loose screw or nut rattling against some metal turned out to be the third brake light. I took it out and drove up the road and not a squeek!! hope this helps. Ive got one left which is in the passenger seat so anyone who can tell me how to take the fron t of the seat off please do. Cheers

Are you sure it is from the front. We have had something similar with our new boxster and it was found to be a screw loose which was allowing the undertray to flex and therefore rattle over bumps.

Yeah pretty sure from front as it stops when you put the foot on brake.

My 996 is still making this noise as well (I think I posted on your last thread about this!). Going back into OPC again on Monday. Think it's either drop links or steering rack.

Any luck

You've almost diagnosed it yourself..... It's something caliper/disc related.... Have your anti-rattle shims on the pads become loose?

If it's affected by putting your foot on the brake it's more thaqn likely brake related. Concentrate your investigations in this area.

Well I would still say it's brake related yes

Can you jack her up and pull the wheel about to locate it? If that doesn't find it take the wheel off and rattle the brakes about...

No, I wanted to take the car into them warmed up so they could hear it themselves (we've been through all this before but hey ho) so emailed my 'service advisor' asking him to arrange a suitable time over the weekend and, even after a couple of follow up calls he never got back to me. So they've just let a slot go spare because they won't answer their mails or pick up the phone, muppets. I'm so fed up with this that I'm tempted to just live with it but that just makes me even more angry about it!

I agree all signs point to the brakes somewhere but the shims from the S should take up any slack that may have been there and everything else seems to be tight. The main thought is that when the brake is applied this loads something up along the line.A new strut top was also replaced on the offside.
