Norwich Union - pay as you drive insurance for my Porsche..?
Discussion
Time for my insurance renewal... and I'm trying to get my renewal premium of £770 down (currently with a 5000mpa restriction through Adrian Flux). Spoke to A.Manning through PCGB and I can get it to £500 if I keep my annual mileage to 3000mpa. At 5000mpa with them it's circa £600.
Thought I'd check out the new pay-as-you-drive scheme from Norwich Union. And for 5000mpa they estimate it will be around £500 as well. But for the PAYD you need to have their 'telematic device' (a kind of satnav/tacograph) fitted and have a traffic assistance (route/traffic advisor etc) type button fitted in the dash. Whilst I am not at all keen on having holes drilled into the dash they've assured me I can elect to have this button put somewhere out of sight.
I have a slight reservation that this device does record how fast you drive as well. And although they've assured me of data protection they would still be legally obliged to provide it if requested by the Police. Now that could work in my favour if I was in an accident and wanted to prove I was driving sensibly. However it would also work the other way (although touch wood no incidents of my doing for last 12+ yrs). Also although not a fully blown tracker device it could also locate it if the car was pinched.
So was wondering whether anyone had gone the NU PAYD route with their car and whether there were any issues with the device and what they thought of it?

Pretty emphatic response guys.. Thanks.. Obvious I suppose on reflection.
The upside is that if there were an incident I'd be able to point to my 'safe and sensible' driving. The downside is that even my 'safe and sensible' driving takes me above the speed limits (weather conditions, traffic and my driving ability considered) quite often. And if that was analysed at some point in the future by NU or the Police they'd be pretty binary and not take account of the capabilities of the car etc.
So back to A.Manning then (but will have to renew my PCGB membership too which I found pretty worthless last year).
Thanks for helping me avoid a potentially regrettable choice.
