KayC and his amazing 996TT obsession
Discussion
You really need to talk to some owners of both the 996TT and the 996 GT2. You keep going on about how the TT is a superior road car, but you are so, SO wrong. Drive a GT2 for a few hundred miles (you need to so you can get over the shock of the performance before driving it with confidence - unless you're a bit handy behind the wheel), and you will surely come to the conclusion that a standard TT is boring by comparison.

It was pouring with rain today, and I drove my car at TT speeds (slow mo for non Porsche owners) and it was fun and safe , although when I entered the "zone" It was still fun, but I felt like I was on an ice rink, with just my socks on.
So, to bring this thread to a premature conclusion, a bit like the torque curve on a TT, A TT is better than a GT2 for insurance and fuel consumption purposes, for all other reasons, the GT2 excels.

Not meaning to Piss on any bonfires here and each to his own, but here goes anyway......!
I am the ex GT2 owner (now Cab owner
) that KayC often refers to. I loved my car, and would have one anyday over a TT (and a GT3).
I know that he goes on bit about it too (just a BIT!), but I would have to agree that the TT is a far better resolved road car for 99% of the time than any GT2/3. (it doesn't mean that you have to prefer the driving experience)
My initial thoughts on the TT (gained from my time with a 996 C4S) were that the car is a bit lardy, and too safe. However - having driven KayC's car a few times, including getting the DMS upgrade done for him, I have come to the decision that it really is a fantastic car. It's really not 'lardy', or 'too soft' - it's just a brilliant car, and will 'scare the crap' out of most drivers, at will.
Anyone that says 'my Gt2/3 will leave your TT for dead' is either:
a) Jenson Button,
b)seriously disillusioned,
c)taking insane risks on the public highway...
I'd still go for another Gt2 myself, because it's a car that you have to love, and I could never feel like that about a TT.
I think that most issues here are probably with KayC's inability to accept others views (sorry Kev), but fair play to him because sometimes there really can be a load of crap spouted around on the Forums........

Testarossa - I am of the same opinion on the TT power deliver - but make no mistake, the delivery in the DMS car is totally different, pretty much GT2 like. Where the power would feel like it ebbs away at 5k rpm, with the DMS, it boosts higher, and make good power through to the Redline. A very worthwhile mod..... IMHO

Just DMS a gt2.. was told 520-530 bhp easy... thats a extra 60-65 bhp for 1800 quid... a TT unless a x50 will never tune as well as a gt2...!! The TT has smaller turbos... No contest to me gt2....!!

Hey up ..
Kleonard nice video...
The GT2 is 1 hell of a machine i have had to pick 1 up for 2 weeks running now on a friday for a Tubi exhaust and then yesterday for roll cage to be fitted and i really have to concentrate and watch what im doing in it as it is so damm fast.
This 1 has been DMS upgraded and estimated at 530BHP,really should get it on the dyno.
A 996tt is in my opinon a grand tourer that grandma can drive fast all the help on tap with bags of power.
A GT2 is like having an axe murder sat next to you,you never know when its going to kill you.
A strange feeling when driving a GT2 dont know weather i love or hate them,i love everything about them but dont like the way they can just wizz upto 150 mph in no time but the rear end just kicks and kicks all it needs is a little dampness and whoooooo its gone.
I love the designs of the GT2 and the styling, people think its an overgrown 996tt 2 wheel drive well it isnt!
I would love to track 1 at a circuit (not being any kind of driver would need some help !) and see what its like because im my opinion that is where it would really come into its own.
All in all i must say for everyday usage and driving i would opt for an X50 996tt with tubi exhaust , manual of course.

I think i should comment on this...my comments on the tt are mainly in defence of a car that gets slagged off on this forum regularly because its lardy,4wd,un-pure blah, blah, however in my experience after ownership of many vehicles(lots of them so-called legends)the tt is miles above any of them as a ROAD car.I am not talking about driving experience, purity, tradition etc i am talking about the ability to cover the ground quickly at about 80% effort. On track the tt would be a disaster imo due to its weight.Simple fact is the gt3 on the road would have no chance versus a 500bhp tt,fact, if the driving ability of the drivers was the same...on track the gt3 would probably win.The gt2 on the road is awesome but in my eyes still needs a very good driver giving total committment to go quickly..unlike some of you that clearly are Nigel Mansells secret love children i dont put myself in that category.
I think a reference to EVO magazine of mar 06 would be worthwhile..Harry Metcalfe driving a 996tt across the Cotswolds..'This is full-on supercar fast, yet its not just the performance that impresses. Its the combination of devastating cross country pace and confidence inspiring composure that has always been the turbos most amazing facet.A few months ago a GT3 was a disaster down this road-its overly stiff suspension unable to cope with what the road was throwing at it.Tonight in the turbo, the 4wd is taming the power delivery while the road-biased suspension soaks up the vicious dips and humps far better than the race developed GT3.As we hammer along the final straight there's no doubt this is the quickest car ive ever driven down here'.From my experiences i agree with his,i presume unbiased opinion. If i want an awesome track car i would buy one,csl,gt3,noble etc but i dont...i want the fastest road car for my ability and thats why ive got a DMs upgraded tt.

I read that same article this morning and concur 100%, like Kayc I`ve owned a large selection of high performance cars through the years and the tt tops ALL of them as a road car.
Keep on keeping on Kayc

agree with you about the tt being faster on a wet road down twisty bits..no doubt..!! I constantly have to keep the revs below 4k in my gt2 on twisty road secions when wet due to wanting to spin wheels everywere... lots of short shifts with careful aplication to the trottle... Granted its a nightmare and i personally will not let anyone drive my car in the rain in the above conditions... Having said that the buzz that i get from such is un rivaled...the enjoyment is unbelievable. Might not be the quickest down a wet road but the fear of getting it wrong pumps the adrenelin like nothing elce..
No down a dry road.. thats a different matter.. probably come down to drivers balls and tallent or stupidity..!!!
Thats why i rate the gt2 better for "ME" .. puts more fun into driving than a tt...??? What u think..???

More fun yes..quicker no...it depends what we are talking about, best fun i had was on a Yamaha rd250lc when i was 17...not sure if i was still riding it that i would argue how good it was to a bloke riding a current r1... No down a dry road.. thats a different matter.. probably come down to drivers balls and tallent or stupidity..!!!

NOT SURE HOW MODDIFIED YOUR TT IS BUT WITH A STANDARD TT ON A DRY ROAD... SAME DRIVE IN BOTH... GT2 IS FASTER... FULL STOP.. LOOK AT THE RING TIMES...FACT.
I agree the gt2 is quicker coz at the ring you are not interrupted by tractors, horseboxes, blind corners with some geezer trimming a hedge down...therefore fairly committed in comparison to normal spirited road driving.....The csl also does a good ring time but again on the road is hardly any quicker than a standard m3...tracks and roads are very different things...see above evo article. Edited by kayc on Saturday 21st October 09:13
yea i understand what you are saying.. dont want to get into a "my cars better than your car crap"... i drove my mates tt last week around the ring as well as the famous 997 cab.. his car just got a mtm remap and a exhaust. The lads think its about 480- 500 bhp.. i was impressed by the car in a straight line but when it came to the corners it felt heavy compared to a gt...not sure about the 4wd for track work..having said that the pasm light was flashing alot which also spoils the crack a bit... but still a good package..
