986 S to 987 S power
Discussion
As for as I know everything has been updated in the 987. Engine, drivetrain, gearbox - the lot. Again - as far as I know - there is no possibility of fitting 987 systems to a 986 and getting a power hike.
If you want to upgrade your Boxster 986S go check out what the independents are doing. Superchargers (9M) etc. Ruf used to fit a 996 engine into the 986 - that went well.
I expect, however, you would be far better off chopping your car in for a second hand pre-depreciated 987S in terms of bang for buck.
Having said this - I test drove a 987S and, whilst it is without doubt a better car than the 986S, it did NOT seem massively more powerful (despite 20bhp extra). The 295bhp 987S (MY07) may represent a more noticeable upgrade...I haven't test driven one yet.

OK
As far as I know the basic engine on the 3.2 987S is basically the same as the 986S however it has 20 extra horsepower. Reading the literature I found reference to a higher capacity induction system. Also looking at some photo's of the underside I noticed a more purposeful looking tubular manifold.
Therefore I got to thinking if I could bolt on the new airbox and exhaust from a 987 I would end up with a 20bhp power increase.
I believe the 987 is slightly heavier than the 986 and therefore only slightly faster with the extra power.

You might want to try www.ppbb.com for a admittdely US-centric Boxster community. There are some very enthusiastic posters on there and someone will surely know what can be done.
I have not heard many reports of 'incremental' improvements (ie. from one generation to the next) but there are more and more reports of quantum-leap style enhancements from superchargers and the abovementioned 3.4 (911) engine transplants.
Good luck with your search for more power.
