Hi Everyone,

I've got a rather annoying oil leak on my 1988 944 Lux (2.5), and I've had another go at locating it today - as a result I'm pretty much certain it's the sump gasket near the front on the offside - mainly above the crossmember.

Now it's been leaking like this for a while, but it doesn't leak anough that I've been bothered to sort it out, but I reckon it may be getting slightly worse, and it does make a bit of a mess...

Now I realise changing the sump gasket is a major ball-ache involving dropping the crossmember and supporting the engine from above, so I'd rather avoid this unless I'm sure it's what needs done.

Would it be a good idea to get the engine bay steam cleaned so I could be sure I'd accurately identified the leak?

Is there anything else in that general area above the crossmember that could be leaking?

Is there anything else I'd be as well replacing while I'm in there?

I'll be replacing it myself if it comes to that - I don't fancy paying 10 hours labour!! Especially as the parts are ony about £30 for the gasket and £10 for the loctite sealer...

Cheers Everyone,

Fatboy

P.S. I've just topped the oil right up and noted the mileage, so I'll be keeping a close eye on the oil loss....

Definitely clean as much as possible, the source of the oil leak may not be were you initialy think it is.

Cheers for that Interloper. Just have to find somewhere to do the cleaning...

Steam clean is one way of cleaning, but if you can jack the car up (or put it on a ramp) you can do the same job with some cleaner and a jet washer.

Hope it is something simpler than a sump gasket ...

I've had her up on axle stands searching for the leak, and it's a bit of a bugger to get in there, hence thinking it's a ramp job.

I'm almost certain it's the sump gasket though (bugger!), as I can't see what the hell else could be leaking round there... I was hoping someone else might have some good news hehe

Still, it pushes me further towards the LS1 conversion

Mmmmm, now that is one conversion I would LOVE to see in the tin.

It takes a special kind of wit to turn a £50, 10 hour gasket change into a £3K engine swap, but I'm just the muppet for the job
