Always wanted one but never had the cash, now that I do not sure what to do....

Is a 60k mile car to be avoided, it's tiptronic... how well does the tip box hold up? how many miles of life can be expected from one?

On a Turbo what are the 2002 changes, just interior?

No problems.

111 point inspection then Porsche Warranty for £895 per year. Everything's then covered for 125,000 miles or 10 years.

Inspection cost is about £250 and anything not up to scratch has to be done before you can buy the warranty, but the cover's well worth it (European breakdown cover included, so you may save your AA membership too).

The Turbo should be a more resilient car than the standard 996, cos it has the old 965-style (or earlier?) bottom end with dry sump.

Nothing wrong with a 60k car, barely run in !
Though stuff like clutch (could be due a 2nd by 60k) and suspension bits might be getting worn & need replacing (drop links esp) Would say get a full check done on it at a Porsche garage.
The engines on these cars are very strong, hardly any "common" problems at all and they can handle well over 100bhp more with no problems on standard internals.

Tip box as far as I know is pretty reliable, though I hear that when modding they cannot take as much extra power as a manual.
02 onwards = glovebox, rain sensitive wipers, dipping rear view mirror, better interior plastics, BOSE added and these cars seem a little more desirable but really quite minor changes - the engine / suspension / styling remained the same for all years.

Bargain of the century IMO, a 60,000 pre 02 car is probably around the £40k mark for a car that does 0-60 in under 4 secs & knocks on the door of 200mph straight out of the box.

A 996 turbo with over 100k miles wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Service history (and more importantly service present) depending.

Wot matey said above about the bottom end!

milage - no issue, as above 100k plus wouldnt make any diff in my mind.

tiptronic - diff story, suppose if your in london commuting into town I could see the benifits but any less than nose to tail 30 mins in traffic twice a day id easily put up with the manual to commute, I guess its each to their own though.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought I read somewhere that there is a 'major' service due, possibly at 60,000miles where the engine needs to be dropped. You should verify this has been done or make sure it is built into the price.

Hi, would you mind if I asked about the noise from your 996..

I am also having noise coming from the rear, that starts about 30 but then leads to a steady hum at 70... probably loudest at about 40... is this similar to what you had? The rubber is down to the minimum and is being replaced this weekend so I've got my fingers crossed...

These cars are set to become the definitive supercar bargain, in fact they already are.

If there was the remotest chance of avoiding marital meltdown, I'd be in like Flint.

If you're free enough to pursue your own destiny, it's a simple case of wad/kidney oot and Schnelleraption Central, here we come.

Have you driven the car you mentioned, yet? I don't want to get into the whole Tip debate again for now, but I've noticed that once a few miles are on the clock, Tip can drop any pretence at trying to get you anywhere fast and revert to hearse-mode. Last one I tried drove like a Hamburg Taxi, and the drivetrain felt exhausted and sedated. Everything was still tight (car only had about 50,000 miles) and the car was in good condition generally with FSH, but there was a lot more 'whhuuUUUUuuhhhh....WWWHHHHuuuuuUUHHHH' going on and not a lot of speed - even for a Tip.

Tips adapt to your driving style. The reason it was behaving like a hearse is because you drove it like one matey!

I said 'hearse', but given that it was a Tip, I probably meant to say 'hers'. My bad.

As it happens, I'm posting this at an ungodly hour because I just got n the door after a 1,500 kilometer jaunt in a Tiptronic Cayman S. Too tired to post anything sensible now (not that I've ever posted anything sensible in the first place), but I did take on board a lot of the comments made by protagonists regarding Tip and tried all sorts of techniques today. I shall post my findings at our next joust, 'Suv.

By the way - any Cayman S owners out there - that is one effing fantastic piece of kit. Even with moron-tronic.

Stonking bargains these right now. From a quick look, £40k could even buy a RHD early car even with a good colour and satnav.

Nearly as good a buy as a Mk1 GT3...but thats a different story altogether

No-one's got a crystal ball but i would have thought the GT3 would have less to fall from here but neither car should fall that much from now if you look at what 993RS/964RS/993TTs go for.

all imho

Ajit.

I spent 3 months trying to find good one under £45k, and really struggled. There appear to be more Tips on the go in Seal Grey. I'd def avoid the Tip, and go for silver or black. I reckon anyone selling a black one was asking about £1000-£2000 extra, and then more for PCM. The '02 had Bose, alcantara headlining, elec/memeory seats, and s-roof as standard. If your going to keep it for a few years, the milage is irrelavent, so long as the price is right. If you're only keeping it for a year or so, I'd try and get one with less than 50k.
