Saw one of these in the OPC this weekend.

Like it a lot.

Bit of a shame it only comes as a 4 - I prefer the 2. Wonder if it'll appear later?

[cynical]no doubt, classic Porsche tactic of releasing the high spec version first and cash in, then release the lower spec model 6/12 months later[/cynical]

My impression from the noises made from Pork Germany are that the Targa will only ever be made as 4 which seems reasonable given the fact that the 4 has a wider arse so any model changes would require major development

I think that the 4wd makes sense. If you want a Targa over a Convertible then you're likely in an area with poorer weather conditions... Don't think they sold many 2wd Targa's of the 996...

why do you say that? The Targa presumably does not need the wide arse for a particular reason so roof system could easily fit onto the 2wd body?

Judging by the odd looks (to me) and premium I suspect the 997 targa will be as unpopular and unloved as previous versions (except to those devotee Targa fans of course) and they will all be nafftronics.

didn't they say with the Cayman S that there wouldn't be anyother variants???

nah, they could use the 2wd cab (seeing as the targa is based on the 4wd cab body)

I do like the wide body of the 4, but.. (1) there is a higher cost with the 4 and if a non-targa I would chose a 2, and (2) the 4 has a smaller front boot than a 2 and with a lady who likes taking 43 pairs of shoes on holiday, space matters.

Would DEFINITELY select manual not tippytoptipbolloxtronics.

Would select the S over the non-S (caliper colour is important hehe )

Don't agree with the comments 'if no cab, then likely to be bad weather, hence need a 4'. I don't like the look of the cab and actually don't want one (heeeeeey, there's the Cayman justification comment bounce !!). It's so much nicer than sunroof, yet it still a tintop. Perfect. If they did it for the Cayman, the order would already be in!

Strange to prefer the Targa on looks. IMHO it tries too hard to look "premium"... Must have to do with the price premium, I guess...

The Targa is based on the Coupe not the Cabriolet. It has not been based on the Cabriolet since the 993

I don't think they sold any 4WD Targa 996 models - as they did not make any.

So, the statement's factually correct then!

Positive. The panels are quite common across most of the 997 range. But the Targa is based on the 997 Coupe bodyshell as opposed to the 997 Cab. Same as it was on the 996 Targa.

Ok - to satisfy Pikey - I should have said... they only sold 996 Targas in a 2WD platform as they did not make a Targa 4WD in the 996 Variant.
