What's the concensus on here about buying a 996 which has had more than average number of owners. Looking at a 2001 996 which has had 5 owners ...

Thoughts?

Wouldn't bother me, seems to be the norm.

Often you'll find they're just plate changes.

Pretty standard with Porsches as they are seen as 'trophy' cars that can change hands every 12 months.

yeah, as above...

The fact is, 911's are generally bought in 3 ways:

1. By people who can afford to change their car once a year (or even every new plate)
2. By people who buy them as toys
3. by people who buy them the same as every other car.

So, for a 911 to have 1 owner per year isnt exactly a show-stopper, and in some cases, as MT says above, it could simply be private plate changes?

Whats more important is the full service history and condition of the car...

but what about

4. people who buy them who can't really afford them, don't maintain them properly and then move them on ?

I changed plates on 2 cars and a motorbike, never shown as an extra owner.

When I bought mine DVLA said it had 5 owners, HPI check showed two of them as plate changes.

I've changed the plate on it since, and it hasn't added another owner.

Don't know why it doesn't always apply. confused

Woah! Woah! and once again Woah!

A sensible post, explaining the issue clearly and fully, no attempt at sarcasm, humour or one-up-manship...

You do realise this is the Porsche forum right?

5 owners in 3 years is a lot even for a Porsche - might be a fluke, might be a lemon. I would ask the current owner for past owner details and contact them (and follow the trail back if you can).

either way I would be looking to knock a few K off the normal price for such a vehicle as it will put a lot of buyers off when you come to sell as owner 6

NO. I would look at why so many - but not that bothered really. Especially if the car appears in good condition and has a warranty/ or you get it checked and warrantied yourself.

I bought an 53-plate 996tt X50 that had had 3-owners in a total of 1800 miles fron new from an OPC.

It is quite common to see Ferrari f360 for sale at Main Agents with sub 10k miles and 7 owners...

Sorry, but I don't have a 911, but the two 944s I have bought were both bought for the same reason. The 1989 2.7Lux I bought in 1998 had only had one owner and full service history. The 1991 944S2 I bought in 2005 (and still have) was one owner and full service history. I think these were better buys than lower mileage multi-owner vehicles. You know where they have been, they will have been better looked after, there is only one point of cantact if you have any queries about the car, and there is usually every receipt ever for the maintenance, tyre changes, etc. I even have the original invoice for mine. If you look around you will probably find a one owner car - especially as you are after a 2001 model. For example, on Thursday I was looking at a 993, 1994, one owner, 5400 miles - five thousand four hundred miles!

They're out there if you're prepared to look and wait.

I bought a low milage 996 over a year ago and can advise against it, so far nearly everything has been replaced, over 10k's worth in the last 12 months!

its no scare story, fortunatly most of it was done under warranty, or id be homeless.

ive done nearly 30k miles in it now and she is perfect, apart from the occasional rattle over very bumpy roads.

milage & number of owners = nothing

its easy to make these cars look good, just check they have history, I just bought the first one I viewed and paid for it in the long term.
