Following on from my thread yesterday (OPC Buyers Beware) I did the deed and have bought the 997 CS from OPC 2. (Bennno, OPC 2 matched the p/e price of OPC 1).
Now the painful bit: This 2002 996 C2 Cab' cost me in "depreciation" £13k e.g. difference between purchase and p/e price over 18 months of ownership.
Verdict: It was worth every bloody penny. It really gets my goat to hear people whinging about depreciation or when asked what was their worst investment, they respond "Oh the car I brought in 1982..." If you think by popping down to your local toyota showroom you are going to pick up an appreciating asset then you need your head tested - stick to ISAs. If I take a train into London every day spending £6kpa, should I be expecting a return on investment?
I used the 996 daily for business and at the weekends for fun and it has given me bucket loads of memories and pleasure. Driving it always puts a smile on my face and sad to say, I even missed it when I was on holiday or abroad on business. The car is just so accomplished (whatever your use) and over 18 months cost me £400 in servicing with an OPC plus new tyres. What other performance car manufacturer can compare, Lambo, Ferrari, AM? I think 996s get a hard time but I would thoroughly recommend them. The 996 was my third 911 by the way. I also owned a TVR 4.3BV, which was also extremely fun to drive but it fell apart practically daily and dropped a wedge on depreciation - but TVR owners (as did I) appeared to see this as part of their attraction.
It will be interesting to see how the 997 compares.
