First of all thanks to everyone for the advice on trackday tyre pressures, your advice and help meant that the day at Donnington was a great success. My next plan is to improve the general performance of the engine in gradual stages, today I had a base power run at a local engine tuners just to see how well the standard original 97k mile engine was, result; 232 bhp @ 6000 rpm / 228lb/ft torque @ 5000rpm measured at the rear wheels. First question, is this a typical output for a bog standard engine of this vintage?, I do admit that it leaks oil from the through bolts like they all do, and when I do have it rebuilt I might go for 3.8 barrels & pistons, is this a cost effective power gain?. At this point I would also ask what is the most effective exhaust mod i.e.cat bypass/cup pipe/g pipe bearing in mind noise limits also what would be the best induction mod. One other route I might explore is either chip tuning the standard ecu or maybe bearing in mind future plans try and afford a motec conversion but as a basic question whats the cheapest way to get 300-325 solid horses?

The 3.8 conversion is most certainly NOT a cost effective route to increasing the output of your 964.
Contact 9M for either Motec or Motec +1 conversion, if that doesn't satisfy your cravings, they produce some rather nice billet heads.
Lots of info on the 964 Forum at Rennlist www.rennlist.com

Good luck

232hp at the wheels equates to about 270hp at the flywheel (assuming 15% loss, which is roughly right for a C2). This is well above spec (250bhp) even for a fresh engine. Are you sure it hasn't already been chipped?

With regards mods, it all depends on what you want to spend. 300bhp is about the limit without spending big bucks on Motec/cams/bigger injectors etc. - this is when it may be worth considering the 3.8 P+Cs. Otherwise a live re-map together with exhaust and intake mods should get you close to 300. Colin Belton's website (Ninemeister) is probably a good place to look at some of the options - www.porschetuning.co.uk
