.........I was offered a 996 turbo coming up to five years old next Feb. Black/tiptronic and very well spec`d. Full PSH, pukka condition and one owner. About 45K miles..............£45K. I know it`s only worth getting if it`s the right car but does it sound good to you guys???

that is only an average price for that age/mileage

I would not buy a godawful tip at any price - try before you even think about buying. No problem with them, just turns a Porsche into a Merc so buy a Merc.

I would've thought a tiptronic tt was just an extension of the philosophy. Less driving to do.

Tiptronic doesn't suit the 996TT if the two I've driven are anything to go by. Not unless you want your supercar to groan and moan at you like it's constantly ready to barf. Tiptronic TT's should come with a dunce's hat as standard equipment. Seriously - and I love TTs.

Runaway steam train, maybe. One with a stoker that's just been told he's being made redundant and has lost the will to live, and with an engine driver who's forgotten to take his medication and is distracted from driving by an ongoing argument with his hat.

I have a tiptronic X50 but no dunce's cap that I'm aware of. It also doesn't moan and groan....unlike all you driving gods in your manual machines. Seriously - it suits my driving environment the vast majority of the time, that is, sitting in traffic until an opportunity to rip down the road for (usually infrequent) short periods, presents itself. If you don't like or rate it then that's your opinion. Not mine.

On that subject, if you were buying a 997 Turbo, would you go for tiptronic, now that its actually faster than the manual? Personally, if you have gone for a turbo over a GT3 I think the tip is the right choice. nerd Haven't driven any of them of course so I'm talking from a position of complete ignorance

I would buy a 997 Turbo Tip, yes sir.

(a) I have a one hour commute in traffic every day
(b) It is relaxing and easy to drive when you need to be cossetted in the morning
(c) One twitch of the finger and a flexing of the right big toe and it will leave anyone not blessed with a Senna-esque gearchange frantically sawing though a box of shrapnel.

Yes, I would love a manual 997GT3 more than almost anything, but meanwhile, back in the real world, the 997 Turbo Tip remains unbeatable as a tool for life.
