Having looked through tons of classifieds though- the X50 option doesn't seem to pop up that often. Does anyone have a feel for how many cars were actually spec'd with this option? I just wonder what my chances are on finding a decent X50 within budget (approx GBP 60k) in MANUAL?!!

I wasn't really bothered about having the X50 pack at first, until I found out they are actually slightly larger turbos... Has anyone driven them back to back (TT vs TT X50) to tell whether there is any greater lag on the latter? Or is the difference barely discernible?

No difference, mate. Better buy my non-X50 and save 10k

edited to correct the savings. TWICE!

The option was brought in for the 2002 model year.

I read something about this a while ago in a porsche magazine. From memory during the years the option was available about 1/3 of UK cars had the X50 option. Of that one third I think about 40% were tiptronic and 60% manual. The later turbo S has the X50 stuff as standard.

Someone on here was saying his bog stock X50 made 500lbft if I recall. The standard one is like 420 IIRC so I'm reckoning they're probably a solid improvement on the standard.

Not driven one yet, but I see Joel at RSJ has a nice one albeit in black... and I feel an itch coming on

OK, thanks for that DAZ. I'm reckoning/finding that (some!) 02' cars with lowish mileage are coming in under budget from main dealers, but I think I'll need to take a good look at the situation in the Spring when I get round to moving up from the M3- as I've read some of the trade-in prices people have been bid from OPCs...laughable. Methinks move mine on privately and then look.

From a tuning point of view- I assume the X50 the obvious choice then? Not looking to go mental, but perhaps to get to circa 480-490 BHP ish would be good.

Cheers,

J

A big plus with the X50 package is the ability to tune it, they have a far better platform for going further with mods, if your going to keep the car standard or do very basic mods then i suppose it isn't worth it. However if your one to push the envelope then paying the extra for an X50 model is worth every penny

The X50 feels very different to drive than the standard tt - The power delivery in the standard tt is quite well intergrated with the boost coming in quite nicely.

In the tt X50 the boost really comes in with a wallop at around 3k.

The reality of it is that there is not a massive difference in performance between the two cars, obviously the X50 is faster but it feels so much faster due to the way it serves up its massive 620NM of Torque.

Yes- but what does that mean though? By that, I mean reliable everyday-usable power? 550?

hardly surprsing when the option was £9k ! Was thinking that there are a lot more X50 around in the last few weeks (as enthusiasts move into 997TT?). Damn annoying when you find the perfect car with X50 and its a bloody tiptronic though.

just my opinion but you can do that in a non-X50 car, would be much easier and a bit cheaper to find a std car to your taste and chip it than find an X50 and only add 30bhp. Most X50 chips take it to 520+

I want black! (although I am even considering boring silver to get the right spec/price - I will never consider tip)

Genius, ta. For some reason whenever I search lately, it just takes a few seconds then goes 'computaa says no'. Unlike a while back- it were like lightnin', I tell thee.

There are a fair few X50s (described as power kit on the extras) on the porsche approved list at www.porsche.com at the moment.
