Hello,

I am on the verge of buying a 911 C2 3.6 raging beast.

When I inspected my prospective purchase last weekend, I noted that in the fuel filler cap it said 98 RON only..... Daft question; in my beamer it says this too, but as the engine is able to automatically react and adjust its what-u-call and how-you-say, it can actually run on any grade without loss of performance (IMHO). Must a 3.6 996 run on min 98 RON?

Appreciate your advice.

Rgds, Brin silly

you can run on 95ron and it will run fine but it best to run it on 98

Have fun in your new car.

the 996 is deigned to run on 98 for optimum performance. If you stick 95 in then the electronics will adjust the timing slightly to compensate, but you will lose some performance.

By law, every car sold in Europe must be able to run satisfactorily on 95. As others have said they are soooooo much nicer when given a belly full of 98 or 99.

I normally run mine on optimax / v-power.

Have put a tenner's worth of regular in when low a couple of times. If anything it feels perkier. paperbag

.. well if this is the case , it puts paid to the rumours of the OPC warranty refusing to pay out on a lunched engine that's been using 95 octane.

In some countries, eg Northern Ireland, 98 is not available.

seems a bit dodgy for them to claim that, since in the manaul it states you can run the car on 95RON and the car will retard the timing to adjust...

Porsche can and will check knock counter and determine if you've running the car on bad fuel. They can't obviously determine if you're running on 95 or 97 or whatever. Probably in a Carrera you'll get away with that (with just some timing retard) but in a Turbo if you run it hard in the summer with 95 it will flag the knock sensor as detonation and this will shown on the ECU's data colected by Porsche AG when claiming a new engine just like over revs type 1 and 2. Please note that Porsche AG asks the dealer to send the ECU information stored and some of this information is encrypted so that only Porsche AG can read it. Using 95 once until you get to next fuel pump and driving it easy which show up in as completely different scenario in knock sensor counter for number of flags and duration of these flags as continuous use of bad fuel or lower octane than requested. Porsche is being extremely picky with warranty claims and they trust NO ONE, even their dealers. They have been fooled by their own dealers plenty of times. I know some horror stories of dealers running engines without oil to seizure to claim a new engine, a few years back they would have gotten away with it but nowadays Porsche tears apart a few engines (ramdomly picked or if suspicious) and in thsi case the dealer was charged with the engine.

So the question remains , are manufacturers legally obliged to build cars that can run successfully on 95 ron fuel? .. This has a huge bearing on what I can and can't buy in the future ...

Contrary to belief , Jet1 fuel has about the same octane as camel poo.
It's lower down the scale than deisel .

sounds like a plan...

IIRC there was a thread around here about how easy it was to nick a jumbo from heathrow...

Now, if only we had someone who could fly it? hehe

It's actually called Querosene but Aviation fuel is a whole different story. Its got a high octane to cope with the high compression engines used in AV. These engines are High Compression to compensate for the lower air density at altitude but when they go up or down they need to be able to cope with the extra BMEP (brake mean effective pressure).
