That X50 thread has made me think. My non X50 is tremendous (other than that I'd like X50) but looking at the price to change for basically very similar cars is well into 5 figures, I can't help wondering how much the X50 kit would cost to upgrade to at an OPC.

My understanding is different turbos, different intercoolers and no doubt different mapping.

Any guesses at cost? Has anyone else done it? I know it'd be far more than a DMS upgrade, but I couldn't consider that because of the warranty/resale position...

Verysideways - I don't think the X50 has different ratios - It does have some strengthening done on some of the gears - and I am not quite sure if it has the additional oil-spray that the GT2 has. I am sure someone will advise.

My advice to Supermono would be to go out in a X50 and experience the difference. After driving numerous 996 TTs and one X50 I instantly knew which one I preferred. I am sure you can tweak the TT without X50 to X50 power levels for a lot less money.

Very different cars to drive.

X51 is around £10K so I expect X50 to be north of that

Irish - If you are paying 9k for X51 - you are being mugged. You should be able to get it for about 6k with some haggling...

As for the X50 upgrade... don't forget to haggle on the price for that as well.

assume you would do the sensible thing and get an indie to fit (or yourself) but if you went the OPC route my estimate (based on retrofit of X51 on 997) would be 150% of the option price

So £15k !!

I am sure you can cut corners on that but I would treat a retro-fit X50 car (not done by OPC and fully warranted) with as much if not more suspicion than an easily -reversible DMS ECU upgrade.

Cheaper / better to sell and buy a second hand X50 car methinks

X50 was a £9K option.

Apart from SM insistence over the warranty issue there's no logical reason for retro-fitting an X50 to a "standard" TT.
£9K would buy you a lot of top quality after market tuning parts that would give you way in excess of 450hp.
I'm not sure what the RUF 490hp ? (as fitted to the Turbo R) kit would cost (but imagine that it comes with a warranty on a low mileage car ?)

A little different but I bought the X50 kit for my 993 turbo. It incudes 2 new K24 turbos, new ECU, new oil cooler and new exhaust tips. Whole kit was 4k. Also now have 2 used K16s and an ECU to sell which will offset even more of the price. Complete bargain IMO

X51 is a power upgrade kit for Naturally Aspirated 911's.

The quote I had for X51 upgrade to my 997S was just over £6k.

Agree withg all the above. Same gear ratios, does not have a additional gearbox cooling the GT2 has, although does have the stronger clutch also found on the GT2.

No point in retro fitting an X50 kit at an OPC.

Assuming you're not worried about a warranty, you're better off getting a tuner to fit K24 turbos and a sports exhaust then do a remap. You should then be seeing 510/520ish bhp quite easily. As and when the clutch goes upgrade to the stronger clutch plate as fitted to the X50/GT2.

My advice would be to but a pair of Brand new K24 hybrids from E-bay - £1500

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsch

Then source some cheep Gt2 intercoolers along with a remap and hey presto!

Probably the cheapest route without a doubt.

I believe the X50's has a stronger gear linkage fitted, but this is easily retro-fitted, around £300 I believe. It swaps the plastic one for an aluminium one or something.

I would get it modded by DMS or suchlike, taking power well over an X50, then fit the stronger linkage. The whole lot will cost you under £2,500 & it can be put back to standard at any time.
I believe DMS have not had a single engine failure on 996TT's as a result of thier ECU mods, mainly because it doesn't over-stress the car but also because the cars are so over-engineered that they can easily take an extra 100, 150bhp on standard internals with no problem at all.

150% is my rule of thumb and is supported by eg £1500-1700 to retrofit a sports exhaust. £6k seems bizarrely cheap considering its £8,241 as an option!! Surely no one would order it from factory and get it retro-fit instead? Unless you're sleeping with the Principal's daughter or something.

Not that I'm aware of. My plastic gearshift linkeage broke and I replaced it with an alloy linkeage, bought from www.evoms.com . Details in my car history.

I'd be careful with the NA upgrades as they change the characteristic of the engine much more than actual performance levels. X51 has less torque at lower revs and gains all it's extra power on the top end...

AdamB - Sadly not sleeping with the principals daughter... However, I already have the Sports Exhaust, and the £8241 is the RRP not necessarily the price you have to pay if you negotiate with your OPC etc.
