HELP! Has anyone got experience of owning, or of driving, both a 964RS and 993RS? I've been thinking of getting a new 997GT3 but last night came out in a cold sweat - what if it's a bit too much of a tech-fest?!? I've always liked the 964RS & 993 RS, and of course they're quite a bit cheaper than the 997GT3! I've heard the 964RS is ultra-hard on normal roads, but that the 993RS is a little better - is this true? The car will do about 60% of it's miles on UK roads, 30% on European roads and 10% on track. Any ideas? Or should I stop being a girl's blouse and order the 997 GT3?!? Oh Lord.... confused

No exp of either, but from what I've read isn't the 997 supposed to be the best of both worlds? Compliant on road, then at the flick of a switch perfect for track? Or, buy a 964rs and a 993 c2, best of both worlds!

BaSkey - not sure about the 996GT3 really. It's "in between" two stools for me at the moment; i.e., not enough 'classic edge' to it, and for the price difference I'd rather try and get a 997 GT3. Nice idea re 964RS and 1 993C2 - hadn't thought of that one! bow

There's one in our car park. It's gorgeous and blows away anything newer on looks alone....IMO of course!

Owned a couple of 993RS, driven quite a few different 64RS over the years....each seems to drive differently, depending on set up.

93 is definitely more compliant, but 64RS suspension can be set up to be more road friendly than a track day warrior, you can also fit 93 front struts on to a 64 to smooth things out.

I think both cars are amongst the best Porsches ever, the 93 edges it for me, partly because I feel it is more usable over all. However the 64 is very charismatic and has morr of a banshee engine when compared to the torquey 3.8 in the 93.

93 is more expensive, but if you include lh & rhd production, there are roughly twice as many 64 made to 93 RS.

Try posting this on the Porsche forum, where you will get responses from real Porsche experts.

Huh!...only trying to help

If you need help choosing and advice from a dealer contact paul mclean at

www.gtclassics.co.uk shows current/past stock.

Paul is a decent chap and knows a lot about these cars.

Quite a tight knit community for RS cars, most cars that come up for sale are known, if you find one you like makes sense to ask amongst Rs nutters before you have an inspection and buy.

I've had a look at Paul's web site before - almost went along with a view to buying one last year, but bought a Maserati 4.2 Cambio Corsa instead - I know, I know. But I'd had 3 911's previously and felt I needed a change to make me realise how good the 911 was! (If that makes sense!) The Maser has been a lot of fun - looks and sounds gorgeous, but a 911 it ain't!

Owned both, 993 the better looking of the two (IMO), 964 more hardcore and IMO a purer driving experience.

964 engine waaaaay nicer and more easily upgraded.

993RS IMO overated..............Flame suit on boxedin

If you can get a 997Gt3 fairly quickly I would be tempted to try it, I haven't driven one myself, but from initial owner reports it looks to fit in with your driving profile.

I think the residuals will hold up for the first 6 months to maybe a year, but like all new hot car models, the speculators are in and out quickly.

It would be a great car to own, if you don't like it...sell and get into a 64/93 RS having got it out of your system.

I undestand it is still possible to get a 997 Gt3 for march 07 build through the Porsche network if you call around.

i cant see myself ever selling my 964rs
cant comment about 993rs sorry.

if the thought of spending 100k makes you sweat think about the depreciation - you wont get that with 964 or 993. - what a nice decision to have to make.

and with regards suspension, mine is on cup suspension, very low and very hard. its fine on most roads but pretty miserable in town or badly surfaced country lanes. yes its skittish on b roads but the (unassisted) feedback and response to inputs you get as a result is like nothing ive ever driven.

given that mileage mix I would say the 997 GT3 is the ideal car for you, if you want the horsecart feel don't spec any tech options

there again I don't go all misty-eyed over the "proper" 911s like the 964RS which looks like an old-fashioned crate to me (double thickness, NCB flamesuit on)

Yes to all of this and especially to checking its pedigree. I think I'll end up with another 964RS one day

the best thing you can do is pop yerself down to Brands Hatch on Sunday 26th Nov (MSV Trackday) there will be a good gathering of 964 RS's (N-GT's) GT3's and other assorted Porc we're a friendly bunch I'm sure you'd be able to Blag a ride in the various models you mention then you can make a more informed judgement bring an helmet an you'll have to sign on as a passenger though

Interesting. From what I'm seeing so far I'm more inclined towards the 993RS. I know a lot of you will think I've missed the point, and obviously the 64RS is a superb car - but I really want something that I can drive round town and have some degree of comfort, but then can open it up on the right road and feel like the car is 'talking' to me. AdamB - I think you're probably right that the 997GT3 is the best all rounder, it's just whether I can justify the extra £40k plus the £20k depreciation it'll probably suffer in the first couple of years. (I'm reckoning on £84k once I've specced it how I would like, and guess I'd get about £65k after a couple of years?) A good lhd 993RS at £48k will prob not lose £5k in the same two years. I know we shouldn't talk about depreciation (this from someone with a Maserati and a Range Rover, both of which have fallen faster than masonry from a tower block weeping )

Either car will do the job. The 993 feels a little softer and tends to suffer more body roll oversteer. The big difference is the price. A 964 will probably come out 20 (maybe even more) thousand pounds cheaper and certainly isn`t £20-30k less fun.

What I will say is there is going to be a deluge of bullshit spouted from people supporting their own corner and even more from people who have never even sat in either of the cars let alone driven them. Take what people say with a pinch of salt. It`s very easy to spend other people`s money and only you know how "commited" you`ll be on track. Most people talk a good game but the reality as you fly past them on track is they are fairly pedestrian and could have save themselves some money.

The problem I personally have with the 993 RS is the fact you could actually save money and buy a decent GT3 which I feel is a great car, (and not just because I race one) - I started off racing 993`s and was racing a 993 at the weekend until it`s sad demise so do still keep a foot in both camps.

The other benefit a 964 may have (and again only you know because it`s your money) is that because it`s cheaper you won`t be in awe of it. You`ll be able to relax and enjoy it. I remember when I first started racing a GT3 I struggled to relax knowing how expensive the car was both in terms of cost and repair. It wasn`t until I`d smashed a couple up that I started to relax

Finally be realistic on how much use the car will get on track. Could you buy a standard car and then spend a couple of thousand pounds on the suspension? We have seen some really well sorted car like that which hold their own on track and yet still behave on the road.

Hope that helps

Henry
