Just dropped my Cayman off (to investigate the 'check engine' light that appeared some time ago (not seen since)) and in conversation found out that the short shift kit can be retrofitted and is in stock.

So............. bounce

Shame the X50 pack and LSD aren't available yet!

btw, I know that other kits at a lower price are available, such as this one from Orton, but I value my warranty too much to put anything without a Porsche badge in it.

Pikey - I recently was loaned two cars from OPC whilst my car was in for warranty work, like others on here I was thinking of getting the short-shift kit fitted to my 997 S. Both cars I had from OPC (295BHP Boxster S & a Cayman S) had the short-shift kit fitted and I must say I did not like it one bit.

Sure the travel is shorter but it is very stiff and it no longer feels smooth. Best thing to do is drive the cars at OPC (you use Colchester don't you?) with the short - shift fitted and see if you like it.

I was surprised how it felt because generally the opinion on here is it is a must have bolt-on accessory.

Strange.

Interesting feedback. Must admit I am going into this a bit blind, but I don't like the 'sloppy' feel from the standard.

I use East London (Bow).

Bums!

Oh well, it'll be interesting to see if it's subjective or if I dislike it too!

I'm aware that it's notchy when cold and smooth & clicky when hot. The standard box is a lot different to my previous car's (S2000), which was much shorter and tighter.

S2000 has the best gear change ever IMO. Short shift is nothing like it though.

...interesting stuff. I was also thinking of retrofitting short shift to my 997S as there were so many "must have" comments on this forum. My OPC advised against it at the time. I guess I need to go and test drive then...

never had any probs with mine, it has a slick slick slick riffle bolt action. However recently tested a Cayman S at Colchester and hated the gear box with a short shifter in that so perhaps its due to the engine being in the wrong place

Go and try it in a 997 and see....

gubbs997 - I must confess I have not driven the short-shift kit on a 997 S. Ironic really as it is the car I own. The short-shift kit on a Cayman S or Boxster S that I have driven has been very poor and using those as a yardstick I put my credit card back in my wallet. If I get the opportunity I will try the Short Shift kit in a 997.

I have the Short-shoft on my Carrera 4S (fitted at the factory) and I highly recommend it. No problems engaging gears, even when cold, and it gives a nice 'tight' feeling to changing gear.

Suggest you try one in a 997 before you dismiss it !

The short shift kit on my GT3 was already on the car. I found shifting a real pain. Discovered that shift adjustment is at the shifter end. 30 minute job with a torx bit and screwdriver to remove console, adjust linkage and test.

Made a huge difference to quality of shift.

SO THEN? Who wants to know what I actually think of the SSK now it's on the Cayman (when I've had it for 6 months without)?

E X C E L L E N T !

Nice and tight, clicks, not notchy, much sportier feel. £186 for the part, 1.5 hours labour (£180) plus VAT. Worth it? YES! I like it a lot - really changes the overall feel.

However, I read Geneve's "I've just bought a 997 GT3" thread earlier, my SSK excitement is deflated!
