Hi all,I am just about to lose my company car due to changes at work so am forced to go and buy something else.I previously owned a mark2 mr2,but have always hankered after a 944.Is this a good idea, and how does one compare to an mr2.Any advise gladly received.

Firstly, welcome to PistonHeads!!!

Have a search around the Porsche Section of the site (here) maybe as the same question there, unless Ted moves it first, or just search about for topics related to 944's.

Hope this helps

Take a look at the 944 buyers guide: www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?storyId=6090
I'd certainly recommend one - sportscar bargain of the decade

I would heartily recommend one, I have a 2.5 and have very cheaply modified it to fk Leda Suspension, 30mm torsion bars, uprated anti sways etc etc, few engine mods (all very cheap - filter / chip etc) and for not alot of cash you can have yourself one hell of a track day / everyday road mobile, mine does 500 + miles a week and never misses a beat (also cheap as chips on the insurance) :-)

We had a 944 S2 Cab for a couple of years. It was very well bolted together, really bulletproof build quality and was quick enough as well. I still think they look good today and at the moment appear to be very good value for money. If you get a good one I don't think you can go wrong.

Blasted off to Germany to watch the GP in 944 S2 cabrio about 10 years ago. Great car, only problem done for speeding on M20!

Check the classified section, too, as there are a couple of 944s for sale... certainly Iguana's 944 is still for sale, if you want a tidy pre-S2.

Cheers

As a company car you may try an S2. It would be by far the most pleasant of the series to drive everyday, if a bit more expensive than a base NA 2.5.
(check my running costs).

If buying an S2 you ought to spend "a lot" on preventive maintenance to keep it super clean. These cars feel like bags of bolts when they are not kept in tip top condition, the more noticable it is when choosing higher in the range. You will be amazed how similar 'on paper' cars can behave differently.

A NA 2.5 may prove more satisfying as an everyday car as the mechanic is rather straightforward compared to the S2's but it will quickly feel slow.

Do not touch cars with empty/light service history with a barge pole.

edited to add: drive as many cars as you can before making your choice. There are lots around and they do not sell easily as the prices show. Take your time, read rennlist A LOT, buy Morgan's book (better than nothing), etc.
Mistakes will be costly.

I have an "S". great car.

Before bujying, go onto the Titanic web forum (www.titanic.co.uk/944) and ask the members. Were a friendly lot, and were planning a sunday lunch meeting soon. Why not come along, see the cars, try them and talk to the owners.

Yeah go for it superb cars my mother has had one for about 7 years now one of the very last s2's (1992 in the 968 metalic bright blue) previously she had a supra turbo.
The car has done about 110,000 and has allways been serviced (well over serviced really) very very very important.
The only thing to go wrong with it in 11 yearss was the cam belt, went about 18 months ago (should go between 80,000 -110,000) which was expensive as it had a top end rebuild at the same time just for good measure (£3,500 done by AFN) make sure this has been done if you are looking at one that falls in that milage bracket false ecomomey and all that.
As for handeling better than my chimaera and very very reliabile if maintained correctly (full yearly service from camtune in godalming about £300 ish all in if my memory serves me right.
And the best bit, still as solid as the day it rolled out of the factory even after 11 years and 110,000 (no rust etc etc) miles not many cars that you can say that about.
So good in fact she is only looking at a boxter to replace it.
