Oh what to do......

Flights are booked from 23rd Dec. to 1st Jan. from London City (10 minutes from my house).

Car has not been getting enough attention lately. Seriously thinking of cancelling flights and getting the ferry back to Ireland. 996 is great on the twisties and happy to skip to booze for a driving Christmas........even if it means an 8 hour journey to Holyhead.

PORSCHE 911: There to be driven..........

In a similar situation myself - skiing over christmas

Do i fly, or cancel them and drive down. Austria's a bit of trek though (only ever driven to 3 valees and tignes) and the missus can't drive

i thought modern 911s were supposed to be the ultiamte GT for european miles..? Little contest IMO, airports are horribly overcrowded at christmas time.

When i was last in the UK at christmas time (2004) i drove over the cotswolds (fosse way etc) back to my mothers house on christmas eve and didn't see a soul. I made the sort of "progress" along those roads that night that i hadn't seen the likes of in probably 6 years. Plus it was a beautiful clear night with full moon, which meant stopping at the highest point to look at the view was magical!

Didn't see FC though...

If you decide to drive, note that when the snow starts falling in the alps reaching some ski resorts will require chains and the police won't let you proceed if you are not thus equipped. Do they do chains to fit the large section tyres on the back of a porker?

Do not attempt to go to the Alps without proper winter equipment including winter tyres. If you get caught in a winter blizzard it can take you days to reach your destination - without the proper tyres or indeed snowchains you will be skating around the Autobahn and as mentioned not be allowed on to the small roads in Austria. Also beware of the insurance if you are not properly equipped. Other than that it can be an enjoyable trip.

Seriously .. If you're not prepared to fly out of Heathrow hehe , I'd recommend driving . I think I'd book the 2.40am ferry , get a cabin for a few hours sleep , and have the roads to yourself all the way to Holyhead.

You definitely want snow tyres if you're heading to the ski fields. I looked at it last year, but flying ended up being easier. Driving back to Ireland for Christmas, though, that's another thing...

Wholeheartedly second what Ballcock says. You know yourself how sweet that last section of road is (the A55?) coming into Holyhead!

And if you fly, you'll never fit all of Ballcock's pressies into the overhead locker - those PSEs are bulkier than you'd think!

Make sure you have good breakdown cover for when the engine pops..JUST KIDDING....have fun-use the car for what it was made to do and more environmentally friendly then flying (just)
