he was at autosport day at bedford on friday in new gt3. amazing in white ( black wheels, roll cage ) 911GB. i think the porsche press car: sounds brilliant

he did say however..........." not faster on a track than a 996, just better on the road" made me feel better about my mk1 at half the price.

hmm, (if he actually said that) - now let me see who's opinion shall I take CH's or Walter R's. Not difficult!

I have a MK1. My thoughts are that the 997 GT3 MUST be quicker. It has LOADS more TQ and power and more rubber and bigger brakes.

Maybe CH can't drive the 997 faster than the 996......

Sorry - not doubting you - just wondered if he meant that he personally couldn't make it go faster which is something entirely different. Mind you who cares - both stonking cars and what a bargain the MK1 now looks.

Only joshing ..I am sure even Mr H would agree he is not on a par with Herr Rohl.

I would expect the 997 to be more capable, reasons given above better engine and more mechanical grip.....clearly the biggest advance from Porsches point of view is making it the track car of the range with a significant improvements in everyday useability...which has to lead to more sales potential...and yet more profits.

Porsche have done a great job with the 997,,,interesting to note that 997 GT3 & RS versions seem to be roughly £10k more than the previous 996 versions...Ker-Ching!

totally agree

was cool to see two mk1 ( red , yellow ) a mk2 black and a white 997 all doing the track...

no doubt if and when the extra 40k comes along its a green RS, cant put down this months Evo, truely
the coolest car around.

599 car of the year, well probably amazing too, will get one of those maybe instead with the 80k in two years instead

I had a chat with Chris Harris at the ring last week, well in the pistenklause, about the new GT3/RS and I think he said it was not really any faster, but easier to drive fast on track and better on the road. I was a bit worse for wear though so maybe I've put my own spin on that

He was out there in the 997 Turbo, although second day he just drove his audi RS4 estate long termer around as it was more fun and felt a bit naughty apparently!

He did indeed say that - I heard him too.

What a day though? P1ssed with rain almost the whole day. I wish I'd taken my 996 (with roof and PSM) than my Elise. Was like driving on tip toes...

CSport - why are you majoring on the cash side of these models' performance?
I would have thought that an extra few years of development would have produced a serious improvement, certainly in the accessability of the speed of the later car.

If he got onto Bedofrd, do we assume there are no noise issues with the new GT3's there then ??????

Very much surprised by that comment, mind you, it is heavier than mk1 (&mk2) so extra power needed....(to add speed, add lightness)

But CH is a far more talented wheel man than I.....maybe mere mortals will drive the 997 gt3 quicker cos its easier to do so.....and maybe the RS will be the one that carries the real step up in performance.

What does the RS weight it at BTW?

1375kg with full tank of fuel. Interesting statistic in Evo, dry weight is 1250kg. Only 65kg more than a cup car.

Not sure if those weights assume the carbon buckets which are much lighter than the standard sports seats.

PCCB is not factored in but saves another 20 kg.

Majoring?? more like remarking ......all I am pointing out is how clever Porsche have been developing the cars to be a better performer and more user friendly than the outgoing model, this making them more desirable to a larger customer base. There has been more marketing than I have ever seen on a performance car and the fact thay are approx £10k more than the outgoing 996 versions does not appear a problem...very clever on Porsches behalf.

I am not knocking the cars for a second, they look great although I haven't driven one as yet, when you compare rivals they do not appear expensive as seen in the recent Evo COTY.

Ta - so kerb weight is about the same as a mk2 GT3 (which was 1380, 996rs and mk1 cars were 1350 i think).

If the RS is 1375, what does the stock 997gt3 come in at then?

PCCB - big reduction, unsprung weight!

Cheers

Ajit.

I understand the published difference in weight between the Gt3 & RS is 20kg, with the RS being lighter...remember the RS also has a widebody and I would expect some fluctuation in this difference due to extras, seats etc specified by owners.
