18" Carrera wheels - how strong?

Has anyone else experienced problems with the strength of 18" Carrera wheels? I've recently had an issue (wheel no longer round...), and an independent parts supplier said he'd seen a number that were intended for re-furb but had to be binned as they were similarly affected.

And guess what - according to OPC, wheels are a "wear and tear item"...

I recently had to replace an 18-inch Turbo Twist (technology) rim on my 993. Thought it was a slow puncture, turned out to be a hairline crack on the inside of the rim. My local tyre dealer said they're seeing it more and more nowadays, from all manufacturers - his exact words were "big alloys are getting softer".
