I'm looking at buying a facelift 996 from an independent dealer. The car is due a major service and the dealer has said that they will do it in their service department. The car has full OPC history up to this point, how much difference will it make to the value of the car if it's not serviced by an OPC? The sales guy said that dealers will consider Porsche independent stamps as a full Porsche history, although I suppose he would say that.

I'd most likely be able to get a better deal if I don't ask for the car to go to the OPC for the service. So, would it make that much difference if the service wasn't OPC?

Cheers

Get it serviced by OPC as part of the deal - plus get the 111 pointer and a Porsche warranty on it.

I prefer a specalist service to an OPC one. Won't make much difference.

Cheers for the fast reply. My gut feeling is to get it done by the OPC, especially for a major service. They've offered to fix anything that comes up in the 111 point check as part of the deal. I'd ideally like to get the warranty thrown in aswell, although the service issue is probably going to upset the deal somewhat.

So get the 111 point check done, when it passes get the warranty, and knock off the price of the service from the purchase price. 996 servicing is done on a menu pricing basis.

You have to weigh up the discount on price the dealer will offer (£500?) from doing the service themselves v impact on value.

For facelift I am assuming the car is 3 or 4 years old and IMHO right on the cusp of where the FMDSH ceases to become as important (provided specialist is well-known and has good repuation).

For me your decision comes down to how long you intend to keep the car - a few years or more go with the specialoist as by the time you come to sell it will be to people who are more likely to be enthusaists/done their homework and know a specialist is as good and sometimes better than an OPC.

I think you'd be mad to get non OPC service done on 3/4 year old Porsche. Unless you're planning on keeping it for a long time. Most buyers don't know OPC are no better, if not worse, than top independents, and will pay more for PSH.

Cheers for the replies. I'll make sure that the OPC service is part of the deal if I buy it.

One other thing, the car was apparantly bought from a lease company, would that set off any alarm bells with anyone else? I'm a little concerned that it wouldn't have been cared for as much as a privately owned car, although the service history and general condition of the car look good.

Hmmm.

An ex lease 911, bought from a non franchised dealer...

How much cheaper is it than an euqivalent car from OPC?

For an equivalent spec it's around 4k cheaper.

Hmmm, so assume £1000 for the service at OPC, £200 for the 111 point inspection, £895 for the warranty.....

That's £4000 less £2100 that's £1900 more for a Porsche warranted OPC example which will probably have had alloys refurbed and the nose resprayed for stonechips as a bare minimum......

I'd be thinking very hard about taking a risk for that little, given what could go wrong?

Needs to be at least 5k cheaper to ensure that its fairly priced as main dealers put on a £10k margin (ie the dealer should be making £4k on the car).

so if it were £40k at OPC, independent with no warranty should be £35k and trade price will be £30k. Private sale will be £32k
