I can not believe how soft the paint is on my new (to me) 996. It looks like some monkey has cleaned the car with a brillo pad. I can mark it with my finger nail, surely this isn't right? The front panel and roof seem to be the worse affected. Not sure whether to take a polishing machine to it or start saving for a bodyshop to put it right.

Anyone else experience this or is it just me?

Buy one that's not been bodged next time, and wear your glasses when you go to inspect it before purchase hehe

Excuse my friend Vesuvius' blount approach...

However, it is certain that the paint on a 996, or indeed any other Porsche, is not originally "soft."

I accept that I cannot touch / see your car right now, but it does sound as though your car has had some, well let's just say, fresh paint.

If the paint (usually cheapo stuff) has not been baked on, or indeed is too thick, this can be a result.

My advice would be seek some independant dealer advice (I'm one if you're in Dumfriesshire or Cumbria) before speaking to your vendor...

OK.

Well it does seem like it has had recent, or at least non-original paint.

Some paint solours are by their very make up softer in compound than other...

That is why non-metallic black marks so easily, and that usually blue metallics and pearls are also softer, but I would also be worried like you if my finger nail would mark it!

My 993 has had paint - of this I am aware, but it is hard as opposed to soft

Pretty much what I thought. Will phone the dealer in the morning and see what they say.

one thing porsche don't appear to have compromised on down the years is the quality of its paint finish, this has always been of the highest quality on the models I have owned. It sounds to me also like the paint is not original and not finished well. Unless you have finger nails like Freddy Krueger!!

Goes back to the dealers later in the week. They are also convinced that she has had no paintwork done, so their paint expert?! is going to give her a good going over

Sounds to me like you've already had one.

my 996 paint is soft, I was told by the dealership that because of new EU laws the paint is water based. I do not know if that is true or if they were just getting shot of me.

Vesuvius, I thought the same thing. But as I spunked £300 on an independent inspection which found nothing untoward, I thought all was good.

Most paints out there will mark if you rub your nail on it hard enough.

The German paints are well known for being very hard to work on and often require more abrasive products and time to leave a swirl free finish.

It has been known for some people to use a brillo pad. Bad washing techniques will also leave these results.

If you are in my area I will have a look for you, I have a paint depth gauge so will be able to tell you if the car has had paint work done.

Hmmm. Geuinely sorry for your angst.

Do let us know what happened.

Seems odd that PM passed it and you're having problems...

If some monkey has used a brillo pad on it, I don't think you can blame Porsche for the paint. That is a product for scouring pans and will play hell with the original paint.

replace 'spunked' with 'blew' , 'spent' or 'wasted'
