missus drives 993 and 996 for the 1st time
Discussion
Yesterday morning I took the missus down to Paragon to look at a metallic black 993 tip (she only has an automatic license) that they have for sale. She has an alpina 3 series coupe that I was looking to part exchange for the Porsche. I know the chaps at Paragon very well and they were happy to give me the keys and for me to take her out on a test drive. Well a long story short she drove the 993 for about 12 miles and we returned to the dealership but did not fancy it as it looked more metallic grey than black. Whilst chating to Jamie (one of the salesman and a very nice chap) she fell in love with a 996 C4 tip, black with black hood cab so we were handed the keys.
In her words, I would like to buy what I want and not what you think I should have. So fair enough I took her out in the 996 cab. Within half a mile she said this is a tinny piece of crap, the build quality is no different to my bloody smart car, she pulled over and said you drive it back. I take my hat of to Kerry. She has never driven a Porsche before but could discern the difference between a Porsche built as a quality product and a Porsche built with profit in mind. Over the years she has been a passenger in a number of Porsche's but has never ever driven one. I know these remarks are inflamatory but I could not resist posting it.

After driving many a Porsche I find it hard to believe a 993 is better built than a 996, I drove a 993 not long ago and even shutting the driver’s door had a cheap sound to it. The car is in everyday terms... a DOG compared to a 996, by all means though, if you can handle a car then a 993 is a must for an all round driving enthusiast who knows what he’s doing (or she!!) As Porsche have built cars especially the 911, for a long time I find it hard to believe that their cars get worse in build quality as the years go bye, hence why they are one of the most profitable car manufacturers in the world!! (LET’S THANK THE BOXSTER FOR SAVING THE COMPANY NOT SO LONG AGO) As many 911 owners will torture the Boxster and its owners, I am 21 years old and own a 986 Boxster and although it is not a 911 in performance and name, it is far superior to a TT, S2000 or whatever else you decide to put it up against. So when my insurance will come down I will buy a 911 but let’s cut the bullsh*t about 911 vs. boxster because it isn’t even a competition, the 911 is a fantastic car and although some fellow boxster owners will argue….. It doesn’t even come close to a 911 unless you want a practical roadster but that would be buying the car for the wrong reason

Something was clearly wrong with the 993 you drove then. The 993 bodyshell costs 5 times more to make than the 996 bodyshell, and the 996C2 is lighter than the 993C2. There's a reason for that!!!
I hate to so strongly disagree with your opinion but although the 993 is an old fashioned anachronism it WILL ALWAYS BE better built than anything Porsche have made since. Porsche simply couldn't afford to keep over engineering cars to that standard, that's why the 996 and 986 share so many parts and cost so much less to produce.
O/T: i think the Boxster is a great car, better than anything else in its class, and i thank porsche for making it because it allows them the flexibility to stay independant and to keep building things like the 997 GT3.
I find it hard to believe that any of the fairer sex would find a 993 better to drive than a 996..most women i know(and many blokes as well)think the 930/964/993's variants are totally unpleasant and ungainly to drive wheres as the 996 and even more so the 997 are totally 'normal' cars that can be used everyday. The quirky interior, rubbish ventilation and poor driving position are the main complaints in my experience. The enthusiasts love the air cooled as the quality and tradition is what they want, but for the average bod they are truly awful..imho of course.
