Hi, I own a manual 964 c2 and am thinking about trying to give it a bit more zip. Was thinking about a cat bypass and new air filter. Anybody know what sort of gain this could give me? Are there any sort of reliability drawbacks? Can it fail on emissions come M.O.T. time? Any advise appreciated, Simon.

I have a cat bypas and K&N filter. can't say I noticed much difference with those fitted.

Big difference when I had it re mapped, although I have got used to that now. If you are interested I will give you his details. Top bloke and he knows his stuff on Porsche

I passed the MOT no problem they said I needed one, yet when they put my chasis number in their computer thingy computer said no.

Its an easy job anyway to swap back if needed.
Probably need a new oxygen sensor as the old one will be virtualy impossible to get out so add £80 ish to your budget.

Can it fail on emissions ? depends on how old is the car ? After '92 IIRC the cat "should" by law be fitted , but they do tend to fall off between MOTs

The ECU will as Pesty said, need remapping to make the most of the de-cat
There should be no reliability issues whatsoever
You should see a 20-25 hp gain (on a healthy engine) plus a nice increase in torque and driveability.
For a real improvement in responsiveness, fit an RS lightweight flywheel/clutch package at the same time.
You'll fall in love with car all over again !

Good luck

Its a 90 car so maybe I dont need to worry about taking of the cat. Would be a pain though to keep having to take it of and put it back on again evey 12 months.

No you definately dont with a 90 car. My car is 1992 registered so you are fine. As slippy said the law came in in somewhere between 92 and 93

Here you go. My car must have been registered before August

"The Department of Transport decided that from 1st of January 1996 petrol engined vehicles equipped with catalytic converters and registered after 1 August 1992 must be tested in the M.O.T scheme in-line with European Union requirements for CO and HC emissions. The limits of the test for each model have been determined by car manufacturers ".

ninemeister are good and would not sell crap so you cant go wrong with them.

Plenty of online places sell them. some just a straight pipe like this on ebay at the moment but it is not stainless steel.

Mine bulges in the middle and looks like teh origonal item. not sure if there is a bennefit to that.

The only recomendation when I was looking was to get one that you could put the Lamda sensor in.

Might as well fit a primary bypass while you are at it

Promax do a very good chip which actually does work. A few of us took them on a beta test and found the things to be very effective so we kept them - and good value for £150.00. Add a g-pipe and the air filter and you could have another 30bhp.

280bhp in a c2 964, in standard form (250bhp) it doesn't feel much slower than the e46 m3 I had. 280bhp should have it punching well above its weight.

The cat bypass 'with the bulge' will sound different to the straight pipe. Down to personal preference and whether you do a silencer bypass as well.
Has added advantage that it looks like a sports cat, and the MOT tester won't question it if you tell him its a cat ;-)

As I understand the rules on MOT and cats, you don't actually need to have a cat on a 1992 or later car, it just needs to pass the correct emissions, so if your Porker is clean burning you're alright.... ;-) again.
