Dear all,

Hi!, I'm releatively new to Porsche ownership having purchased a MY98 Carrera 4 earlier this year from this forum. Firstly may I apologise. Due to my complete stupidity, not only is it a 996, but also a tiptronic!, to the purists on here, once again, I humbly apologise.

My dilema is around wheels, the car currently has 18" Sport Classic wheels, and I am interested in replacing them.
The current tyres fitted are 225/40/ZR18(F) and 265/35/ZR18(R) unfortunately I don't have the wheel part numbers at this time, I believe they are on the inside of the wheel.

I wish to purchase a set of wheels/tyres as follows:

Wheel size(F): 996-362-136-50 (ET52). Tyre size(F)225/40/ZR18

Wheel size(R): 996-362-140-50 (ET65). Tyre size(R)285/40/ZR18

Can anyone advise if these will fit?

Many thanks for you help,

Nick.

Hi and welcome (2 non-troll newbies in the space of 10 mins.. wow!)

Firstly, dont worry about it being a tiptronic - at least you can drink your latte while having fun

As for the wheels, why are looking to replace them? Are you after a different design? Or do they just need refurbishing? Which probably would be cheaper?

Hi Nick, welcome aboard.

I can't answer your question I'm afraid, but just to say, don't reel you need apologise to anyone on here for your vehicle choice. There's a lot of ribbing that goes on, but I think 99% of members just take it all with a pinch of salt as it's mainly tongue in cheek.

Good luck with the wheels and tyres.

welcome. beer on the soapbox again I know but (IMHO) you should never ever apologise to anyone for your porsche. not even in jest. not even if you ARE a hairdresser.
AND yes, there are a few "purists" on here who will scoff, but they invariably have very small genitals and think that the purpose of a rollcage is to prevent hapless female victims from running away

Hi Will and Fidgits,

Thanks for the very warm welcome gents!, unfortunately the rear wheels are very heavily curbed, and water has got under the rims at the front, they are a real eyesore. My problem with a refurb is the amount of time the chap would need the wheels as I don't think they could be done by a 'man in a van' at my place and the car is used daily. That said gents, do you know of a reputable company in the North West by chance?. I will search previous threads in the meantime.

Many thanks,

Nick.

If in the North West try PORCSHAPART, Simon is in Ramsbottom, he may be able to do a part ex with your old wheels for a set of new / refurbed items so you won't be off the road.
The only number I have for him here at work is 01706 824053.
Give him a ring, if cannot help he will point you in the right direction.

To answer your question. Look at the outside of your existing wheels. On either side of the valve there will be a number moulded in the alloy. This number will be the wheel size in your case 18 and another number which is the offset(ET). If the ET numbers do not match the one's on your prospective purchase then assume the worst i.e. they may not fit and contact the OPC for a definitive answer.

Good luck

How to read the tyre:
225 = width, 40 = tyre wall height as % of width, 18 is your wheel in inches.

The fronts will be fine as they are the same, but I think you will be increasing the overall diameter of the back wheel, which may cause problems. Leave them as they are - they were designed like that for a reason.

Assuming you have original 18" Sport Classics, the specs are as follows:

7.5J ET50 993.362.134.55
8J ET52 993 362 136 50
9J ET52 993.362.138.50
10J ET65 993.362.140.50

I would guess you currently have 7.5 and 9 inch Sport Classics.

From the part numbers you quote, the wheels you are looking at are 7.5 and 10 inch SportDesign wheels I think from the GT3. So an inch wider at the rear (I guess). The offsets are obviously the same, for the same width wheel.

Hope this helps.

If you get a derisory trade in offer for the Sport Classics I might be interested in them.

Hello and no need to apologise. I have a 98 tip cab so that makes me not only gay but a fiddler of small children as well!

I cant help with the wheels but can say that you have bought an excellent car and should be commended on your choice of transmission!

I see you've finally faced up to it and come out of the closet then, Ron....

Welcome, Nick. Nothing to add to the query you posted (I'm one of those "purists" mentioned above, albeit without beard or sandals ) but I did live in Oldham for a short while and my in-laws live in Chadderton. I'm up there fairly frequently so look out for a Silver 993 Targa!

I wouldn't Dan, 17's were the best compromise I found on my C2 in terms of handling and cost of tyres

Thanks - unfortunately those are 8.5" at the rear, would prefer 9s, which is what I currently have.

I actually got a "set" earlier this year which turned out to be two 7" fronts, one 9" rear and one 8.5" rear!

They went back.

Yes.

You'll find the rear tire size is 285/30/ZR18 not 285/40/ZR18 BTW.

Ian.
