Whilst test driving an AM V8 Vantage last week...

AM sales: "The service intervals are much better on all our cars. They used to be 6 months / 6,000 miles but are now 12 months / 10,000 miles"

Me: "The Porsche is 2 years / 18,000"

AM sales: "What? Wow. That's amazing. When's the interim service though?"

Me: "That is the interim service. It's the 40,000 miler that's the big one."

Having said that, they do do better on warranty though - they have 3 year / unlimited mileage.

You must be getting old if all you are talking about is service intervals.

The car man! The car! What was it like? Impressions please.

When I had a Cerb and found it needed dealer attention every 5 minutes / 200 miles which cost £1,000 these things are important considerations!

I can't tell you what I thought as this is a Porsche forum and the thread was about service intervals!

I was going to post opinions when I've driven what we regard as it's competitor, the 997 Targa 4S, but for you JC.... ok!

Basically I agreed with your headline view of it. I wanted to love it, I wanted it to be something special, I wanted to get out and place an order straight away, but I was left a little disappointed. I love the looks. I love the badge (sorry!). I didn't love the car.

Firstly, I asked why all the car's in the showroom were plugged in. Never seen it before. They all had wires coming out of them and into the floor. Turns out they were battery conditioners - which came as standard. Didn't really understand his explanation as I've never seen them used in ANY other car showroom. Initial thoughts - would I have to keep this expensive car "topped up" whereas every other car I've had can sit there happily for weeks? Hmm..

So, the inside looks good at first glance, but then you realise it isn't that hot. The seats are firm and comfortable, the centre console nice, the dash console is great (apart from the gay "beauty, power, soul" when it starts), and the stereo good. I like the way the SatNav pops up... but then it is utterly rubbish (what era's it from? 1980??). I didn't like the fact the salesman told me it's a £1900 essential option or they'll undervalue it by £4000 at resale. If it was £1900 for a TomTom, at least you'd get something for your money but they're charging you for something utterly cr*p. They should just put it on as standard and up the base price. The driving position was "ok", but the gearbox was in a really odd position. I found my elbow doing strange things when changing gear. Overall, there's no question that the inside is a nice place to be though.

Driving it.. WHAT THE HELL IS IT WITH THAT GEARBOX?? My Yaris has a better gearbox than what that AM's fitted with. Sloppy, long travel, poor ratios. Pants. "Fisher Price" as my friend said! Anyway, on the motorway is lovely - really nice, relaxing and eats the miles with ease. Very quiet and you feel like you could waft down to the South of France with the littlest of stress. In town it's pretty good - certainly could be used as an everyday car. Sits there doing stop/starts quite happily and you do notice people looking at you.. well, at the gorgeous car more like! On some fast country (B) roads, it was.. err.. umm... not very good. Maybe because I was comparing it to the Cayman which is supposed to be more of a sporty car it was unfair, but my opinion was that it was jittery and you had to fight to keep it on line. It went well, but you had to really, really push it. Pushing it brings the exhaust system alive and it sounds fantastic - but the power doesn't match the sound. I felt that perhaps I was used to another so had to drive it harder.. but it still wasn't there.

It held the road, but it wasn't £90,000 road holding. It was speedy, but it wasn't £90,000 speedy. I described it as my friends as gutless and after conversations comparing the 0-60, 30-70, 50-100 times (with a Cayman S) showed there was little in it, I had problems justifing the comment, but I stand by it. I felt the car was gutless. It just didn't want to get up and go, it didn't want to be driven - it wasn't happy. You know when you feel like you're thrashing the car? It felt like that, but the Cayman never does.

It's supposed to be a 911 competitor, but apart from drop dead gorgeous looks and the ultimate in badges, it just isn't as good a car. It is a good, fast car but it's not a £90,000 one, it's a £60,000 one.

Hopefully we'll be trying a 997 Targa 4S this weekend. If it's anything like the Cayman S it'll be way ahead of AMV8. You wouldn't buy it on looks though...

You`re clearly not ready for the Aston Martin experience just yet. Sow some wild oats.Enter the period of life when peace and well being flow over you , learn to be more tolerant , involve your ying and yang , become a Buddhist.
Repel all thoughts of violence, wait until the trans axle warms through thoroughly , don`t rush a gearchange , learn to become one with the machine in a flowing motion , point the nose into the direction you require and pedal to the metal, don`t race a Porsche and above all learn to love yourself and probably the most beautiful statement of alloy body work in the known universe. hippy

But at least they went like stink!!! (btw, I never had need of a battery conditioner in 4 years of TVR ownership!)

You`re clearly not in your 50s when you consider only the looks of the car as yu just pootle about like a Porsche tip driver

Its a crying shame as the Vantage pees all over a 911 in the looks and sounds dept (even though I love the 911 looks I am not blinded by my love)

I`ve been misquoted ( I think man, like er it`s smokey in here)

Always draw off at least two pints of Stela, or let someone else drink them, before a new session and never drink the first one if this is not possible, like I said ,let your oil get hot chap. Wow thats cosmic. cool
