is the fuel indicator on the computer, distance to empty or distance to reserve. THe manual isn't very clear but I think it is distance to reserve. If that is the case, how big is the reserve tank and how many miles could we get out of it?

No one else has come back...so having looked at my 996 manual,it is suprising how bad the details given on the OBC are.
The only relevant section I can see is;

"The more the level falls,the more spontaneous the display reacts.For this reason,range on remaining fuel is not dispayed if less than 15km (9 miles)."

The manual quotes the distance as miles until refuelling is required,I would not run the risk of letting the fuel get so low,but it would appear you have maybe 9-10 miles to get to garage.

As far as I know, its distance to empty - our car has been run down to less than 10 miles on the dash....and the fuel gauge showed a big fat E.

I'm pretty sure it's distance to empty also, but that's almost irrelevant.

You shouldn't be letting your fuel level get that low anyway.

Your fuel tank contains particulates which slosh about with the fuel, but when your fuel gets down to the last gallon or less then you start sucking those particulates through your fuel system in large concentrations. That means clogged fuel filters, or worse clogged injectors.

Personally i start looking for Optimax as soon as my light comes on, that usually gives me 40 miles or so on the range. Often though i will see that my tank is at around the 1/4 mark and just fill up next time i see a Shell, just to be on the safe side.

All IMHO.

It's distance to empty as far as I'm aware. I've just let mine get down to 20 miles to go, and the old needles was very low.

I've had the OBC report "---" miles until empty (i.e. it's dropped below the minimum of 9 miles that the OBC will report). When I filled her up (a mile or so later) she took 59 litres on board. I seem to recall the tank is 64 lites (don't have the manual to hand). So I'd say the OBC is very conservative.
