internet disaster - collective help needed!

[softinthehead]

whilst attempting to fix a small glitch in my browser last night (mozilla/firefox) I appear to have lost - permanently - ALL my bookmarks (favourites). Over 300 entries on travel, wine, car stuff, shopping. All gone. The porsche dealers folder alone had over 40 entries. the whole thing is very depressing

If any of the collective have any lists of porsche-related websites they would be prepared to share with me (especially dealer sites) I would be very grateful

brilliant. thanks Ken

Why not use del.icio.us? Easier to manage, and youcan let others do the legwork. E.g, here are the popular porsche tagged pages

http://del.icio.us/popular/porsche

Sign up, install the browser buttons, and you'll never look back.

There's a Firefox plug-in which lets you store your bookmarks, cookies and tab status online so you can see 'your' browser on any PC. Just don't ask me what the name was ...

[dava]

Check:

(Boot Drive Letter):\Documents and Settings\(Your Logon Name)\Favorites

on my machine it's

C:\Documents and Settings\dava\Favorites

You should be able to reimport them. The files in this folder are normal text files and contain (amongst other stuff) the plain URL of each favourite.

I know this is shutting the door after the horse has bolted, but..

You can backup your favourites by exporting them to file, I have a bookmarks file in the office that I just update every so often..

In firefox go
-Bookmarks
-Organise Bookmarks
-File
-Export

Should protect against any further nasties for you..

I'm no expert but can't you go.........
all programes
accessories
system tools
restore system (to a previous date)

should put computer back to the state it was pre you losing your favs

using that has saved me once or twice.

Best of luck
DW

thanks for all your replies. I did try system restore but no joy. problem was that I re-downloaded and reinstalled firefox and when I did so the new program automatically uninstalled the entire previous one first, including the favorites files.

all is not lost - i resurrected internet explorer which was lurking in the bowels of the pc, and those favorites, though out of date by 6 months, were still there. so some were salvaged the rest i can make up with the kind contributions above.
