Track Day Boxster
Discussion
I'm off to Castle Coombe for my first track day in the Boxster S (MY 2003) next month. Can anyone give me advice on the following please:
- what tyre pressures are best (got 18" Carrera wheels)? As per road, or something different?
- should I top up the oil to max?
- should I keep fuel below 3/4 tank full?
I'd also be interested to hear opinions on how well the car is likely to stand up to track day use (e.g. 5 times per year)? Do I need to upgrade any of the standard equipment, like pads? After a couple of years is the car likely to be affected by track day use? I don't go completely mad and abuse my cars at track days, but I do try to push it fairly hard, within the limits of my own driving abilities! (My reason for asking this is that my previous car (a Cerbera) required new pads/disks and tyres (not on all 4 wheels!) after my last track day excursion.)

John.
Make sure your oil is properly topped up but do not overfill.
Tyre pressures: usual stuff. Personally I will be running at road pressure. The PCGB would advise upping the tyre pressure slightly - read their track day guide in Porsche Post. All the usual roadworthiness rules apply as does checking the tyre pressure as the day wears on...
My experience is that unless you are going bonkers you will use pads and tyres up at an acceptable rate. A rather nice rule I read was that for every track mile you should consider the wear to be equivalent to ten road miles. Driven hard this could be as much as twenty road miles.
Last year I did two hundred track miles - and did two to four thousand miles worth of wear to discs and pads (ish).
So its not so bad - but it ain't cheap either!
