No-one's really commented on the results of the eCOTY this year, or perhaps they have and I missed it, or perhaps no-one gives a toss. Anyone else think the GT3 was robbed by getting a flat tyre? Or does anyone just feel that the guys at EVO get out the lipstick and pucker up any time Ferrari invite an EVO staffer down for a test drive at the *cue choir music* 'holiest of holies'? I must be getting old and cynical, but that magazine bores the arse off me these days. There were quite a few negative comments levelled at the 599 during the testing, then it won the test anyway without much of the usual smooching, licking and slurping that accompanies any new Ferrari drive.

On a side note - anyone got a pointer on how the new GT3 compares to the older one? Has anyone tried them back to back yet?

er.. Porsche has won so many Evo awards they were accused of being biased towards them.

I actually wondered whether they couldn't bring themselves to give Porsche another one - despite the GT3 (probably) being THE evo car - ie a track-feeling road car

The puncture probably didn't help as I don't think everyone got a drive.
For me, I'm pretty sure it's going to be pretty special car whether it won or not.
I've experienced a Mk 2 which was brilliant to drive, but suspension just a bit too hard for everyday use IMO.
From what I've heard and read the new one is at least as good to drive, but also more comfortable for everyday use.

There's quite a lot of feedback on other threads, going back over the last few weeks.

As Adam says, they would be criticised whatever their choice.
I practically worship the magazine as it is faultless and without peer, but how they didn't let any of the top three writers (Bovingdon, Barker and Meaden) not write that article suprises me. It was written very poorly and there just wasn't any real juicy discussion about the cars we wanted to read about. The photos on all pages were poorly placed (not relevant to the writing in the content) and there was no post-review disection of each car, explaining why it did (or didn't) meet the grade, which was disappointing.

Overall a below-average read of what was very obviously a very impressively planned out and arranged collection of cars at some of the best driving roads ever. I didn't feel any heart and soul in the article.

The fact that the GT3 got a puncture was also deflating (ho-ho), especially considering he states he was yet to drive the thing! Still, second place to a 599, arguably one of the greatest modern Ferraris ever, is no bad thing

Wasn't it Meaden that mentioned in the same edition that organising and writing about the eCoty exploits was a mammoth task. I suspect that they (Bovingdon, Meaden and Barker) have simply got on with the job at hand, that of driving the cars, leaving Tomolin and Eveleigh(?) to get on with the writing. driving

Couldn't agree with you more about their writing style, especially Barkers'.

Hmmmm....somehow I can't see them shortchanging the reader somehow.

I strongly suspect that the 599 GTB is such a good car, that it beat the GT3, on those roads at that time, fair and square.

I take your point about evo cars, but I don't think Evo is just about being a track derived car. After all the much lower powered Elise S ( cloud9 ) took the "budget" plaudits over the Exige S.

Cheers

The GT3 didn't finish the test and was not driven by many.

That it was placed is astonishing.

The worry is that a replacement tyre couldn't be found in time --- and they had quite a lot of time !

That could be an awful long time standing by the side of a motorway with your vehicle, sir.

It was David Vivan that wrote the second part of ECOTY. I though he did a better job with the Brabus Rocket write up a couple of issues back.

Nahh...Porsche Assistance would have you up in a hotel in no time.

A small price to pay, I would say.

Thanks - I couldn't remember who it was and couldn't be bothered climbing the stairs to check.

Haven't read the article in full yet (the mag arrives with wuite some delay here in Switzerland) just browsed through it. I was slightly irritated by some comments that the GT3 was a bit too much of a track car. Given that the 997 is much more useable as a daily driver I wondered which mag I was reading...

Spot on critique. A very disappointing issue, which (if you'll forgive me please) has left me with some lacklustre issues of my own.

Edited to make things a little less crass.

2nd for the GT3 versus a much more expensive car was an honourable result, though it was rather strange that the article for eCOTY part 2 was written by someone who didn't even drive it. I bet you next time that Porsche have a car in the eCOTY line up there will be a man with a set of tyres not too far away just in case this happens again.

The base Cayman got well slated in part 1 - above all the high price didn't seem to do it any favours!

I didnt like the article for David Vivians writing. Meaden or Barker always make a much better job of it.

No shame in a £80K car narrowly missing out to one £100K more expensive.

And as for Evo being boring I spend £4.80 on CAR on Sunday just for the GT3 article which was, frankly crap. The write up was poor and the pictures werent that good. EVO any day of the week for me.

The EVO COTY was a big disappointment.

Of course these group tests sell magazines, but it's really a jolly jaunt for the journos and you only get snippets of info about each car.

Still the 997 GT3 was only beaten by a fraction of a point, by a car costing twice as much.

Also thought the Car review was excellent. They loved it.

WTF? so you dont like one guy (who incidently has brought motoring journalism to millions of people who otherwise wouldnt be interested, like my wife and mum) blaming what you perceive as a whole profession going downhill on him is a bit harsh. top gear always has been a terrible magazine not remotely in the same league as EVO

Bit off topic here but does anyone know what cars they've got for next issue's group test?

I suspect I know at least one car that will be there.
