993 Inspection.. Miles from any specialist ... Help required
Discussion
A Friend of mine had locked eyes on a non vario '95 993, tip , with mid 60k's mileage , service history but not full , but appears to be in pretty good nick.
Problem is , it's about 150 miles from the nearest specialist, and before he commits to bringing it all that way , it seems sensible to give it the numty once over ..That's where I come in!!
.. I've done some searching on line here and have come up with a list of usual suspects to check .. I'd really appreciate it if any of you 993 expert types could add to the list below. Obvious items like servicing /oil used/alloys/rust on posts I didn't bother including as they're more 'tyre kicking for any car' items
I'm also wondering if there may be problems with the fact that the car is on 18" wheels.
Thanks for the help guys...
LIST AS FOLLOWS:
*Wiring loom.. Changed?
*lower cam covers.. weeping oil?
*Door check straps
*air con
*battery
*shocks/bushes
*pads/disks/tyres
*power steering rack.. leaking?

The list looks comprehensive. In fairness he is not going to be able to tell if the cam covers are leaking without jacking up the car and removing the engine undertray.
I recommend the normal used car checks and a throrough inspection of the service history and invoices. It should have been serviced at a minimum at least once a year and there should be evidence of other inidental work; brakes discs etc. Also, open the bonnet remove carpets and have a good look around the battery area etc for repaired major accident damage.
The wire harness change is not a deal breaker as it's a free change that any OPC will carry out for you. If the car is on the original suspension then factor in the cost of changing dampers and bushes etc as these will be passed their best.
If he's got time it's worth getting the Peter Morgan book, about a tenner on-line.
Can't think of anything else.

If it's an early car (hence not originally approved for 18s), it's worth enquiring whether it had the steering rack brace retrofitted when the 18s were put on. If not, query whether there may have been excessive wear to the steering rack as a result.
Sorry for stealing your post but I have a 993 c2 varioram for sale at the moment with non of the problems that you noted in the 993 calssified section. It may be a little more than the other car at £24,750 but with non of the usual hidden future costs and in beautiful condition. My number is 07939 586 848 if you mate is interested.
All the receipts to prove the work performed. The only things I would add to your list are a clutch which would be around £1500 if needed, and also the rear wing stays which may need rewelding at this age. The other points to note relate to rust at the bottom of the front wheel arches behind the wheel where stones come up, and rust around the windscreen at the base of the A pillar.
