924S or 944 for road and track ?
Discussion
I am thinking of buying either a 924S or a 944 for road & track-day use. Will be second car so can be slightly impractical (noisey/hard ride etc.) but must retain the rear seats (otherwise I would keep my Westfield). Not sure whether to buy a 924S and spend more money on upgrades or a 944 with less to spend. Any thoughts or suggestions on which car and which upgrades appreciated.
I would start with a 944, there is more of it to tune from a technological point of view, ie it is a wider car, more developed, better engines etc.
There is no excuse buying a 924 when I could probably find you a 944 2.5 for 3k or an S2 for 5k (both RHD)
If tuning it up, you will be spending at least a grand or two, so make sure you have solid foundations to spend it on.
Decent 944 should fit the bill.

I'd echo Doms comments but a 924S (not to be confused with the normal 924) is a 944lux 2.5 engine & running gear in a rather weedy looking plain Jane frock.
Well ok so the early 924S's had a slighly lower compression but that is easily sorted. The advantage of the 924S over a 944 is that it should be posible to get one very very cheaply - I found a sweet lowish miles '87 one for £950 and it was in the sort of realy good condition that would cost you in the £3000 area if it was a 944Lux, and under the skin its the same car.
Also if you get one to the same power level as is easily & cheaply posible from the 2.5 engine ie 185bhp or so the 924S will have a lot less drag so should be a bit quicker on the fast open tracks.
So seeing as you dont need mint bodywork for a track car a sweet example should be found as cheap as £500, whereas its a very tatty 944 that goes under the £1000 mark.
Don't discount buying an ex 924 racer, ok so most (or all from the 924 race series) have the 2 litre engine but the regs now allow a lumpy cam & they now run at 150bhp and when you can pick up a sorted ex racer from £2000 and they are really very rapid on track. You could always bung some rear seats in it
it would be just a bit twitchy & hard for the road tho...
Also if you do go the 924S route a couple of hundred £ will buy lightweight 944 fibreglass wings & rear wheel arches so it will look just like a 944 anyway....
edited to add- please excuse the rather dis-jointed rambling, ive had a wine gum or 2

progers said: Thanks for the info. Leaning towards spending a little more on a 944 (rather than 924S). Where is best to get Leda Dampers and springs for these ?
I have an account - can get siginificant discounts if you want them......
Drop me a mail with car details etc
