I've just read an article advising the drilling of large holes in the airbox of a 964. This is supposed to give a slight power gain and more importantly a great sound. Does anybody know if this a good piece of advice and if there are there any drawbacks to it?

Nice cheap mod that will improve the sound without costing anything. Works on the 993 so should be ok on the 964. The power gain is imho a bit of a fallacy. If you run the originally specified type of air filter, should not ingest anything into the engine by doing this. If you search online for the p-car website, (sorry I'm working away from my usual computer so haven't got the bookmark handy) there's a good pictorial guide to doing this as well as a few other diy jobs you can tackle.
My airbox was drilled in 2002 and has run fine since. When you put your foot down the noise is fantastic. The article is still available on line as my car was the 911 and Porsche world project car.

I was always sceptical about a power gain as drilling holes in box is not actually pushing air throught the engine any quicker. However I beleive that replacing the filter witha k+n filter can lead to a slight gain. Later on I do intend to go down the cat bypass, remap route which hopefully should give a noticeable difference.

Sadly not a noticeable one.911wise said:

Great advice, probably the best and simplest DIY mod for a 964. I did it to mine in 2002 - no drawbacks at all, except my neighbours like me slightly less. It gives a wonderful induction bark at around 4krpm....
I suppose if your car is permanently parked in a thunderstorm, then the air filter would get damp and not let enough air into the engine...but i see you have a garage.
If you want to test the sound first before drilling holes:
1. remove the air box cover (2 clips at the back, 2 at the front, then wiggle it)
2. use some insulation tape to hold the paper air filter in place.
3. fire it up and give it a few revs.
4. A huge grin will appear on your face, head off to get the drill

I actually tried this yesterday, well to be accurate I removed the lid and fastened the filter in place and went for a little drive.
At tickover I couldn't hear any difference.
At cruise I couldn't hear and noticeable difference.
At WOT it was slightly louder but not particularly rorty, for me the increase in noise was barely audible, and not worth the work.
Will have to wait till i finish making my exhaust I guess!

I got the Fabspeed open faced lid and put it on a year ago, not sure about the previous poster not hearing the difference, above 4K it is ripping out!
I've been away for a month and haven't driven the C2 in that time, back home yesterday and took her out for warm up and battery topping up. The motorway on ramp had the airbox barking like a ADHD addled rottweiler and me laughing my head off.
Do the mod.
964s rock. (Dude)
