There is a draught coming into the driver's footwell right onto my shins. Now the weather is getting cold it is a very cold draught! It's not really bad until you get to motorway speeds, and below this speed putting the blower on helps to cancel it out - but not at 70 mph. The faster I go the worse it gets. I've had a good look this morning and can see no holes, but from feeling for the source whilst driving it seems to be by the heater outlet plastic tube thing. Unfortunately I have to be moving to feel the draught, so guess work when the car is stationary.

Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks.

does the heater work i.e can you get hot air out of it or is it stuck on one temperature?

Heater works exactly as it should do, set the temperature and it does it itself, it's not stuck on one temperature, in fact the only reason I turn the blowers on is to try to oppose the draught.

Thanks.

Take the door card off & see if the polythene weather seal is missing. You'll feel the draught that is ducted forwards through the doors from the vents either side of the rear hatch area when you have a window open without it, normally it exits via the gap between the door & the front wing.

As Riverside said I'd check the draught isn't coming from behind the door, I get cold air through the window switches as I've had the door card off a few times and haven't managed to get the seal quite right.
Alternatively check it's not coming from behind the hatch release switch.

I do quite a few motorway miles to and from scotland and draughts are a bit of a problem sometimes, I always have the blower set to position 1 to keep the flow of air through the heater regular, it seems to work OK for me.
Good luck, Andy.

Ah, Just re read your post and it sounds like you have a leak in the piping somewhere, I'm afraid your'e going to have to invert yourself in the footwell with a torch in your mouth and have a root around (it's great fun), either that or ask a friendly midget to accompant you on a high speed testing run up the motorway. (but have a good story ready for the queens finest 'oficers' as it might take some explaining).

I trust Andy means you to invert at rest, not at 70mph!!

Drive below 70 mph and wear football socks..and or your wifes tights. Not with shorts on thought!

Or drive with the windows open, hey presto, no draught on the shins.

I would'nt reccommend inverted at 70mph, but I know I've spent many a motorway mile hunting down that elusive rattle, and have got into some odd contorsions trying to get it to stop.

Ah, the beauty of an old car, 'character' that is.....

Finally sorted it. Because of today's good weather and the fact that I've a trip to Anglesey on Friday and don't want the draught all that way and back, I investigated this fault. Just for interest if anybody has the same problem. The flap on the driver side of the blower unit under the bonnet was stuck open. The linkage from the vacuum unit that opens and closes the flap was seized. Lots of lubrication and it now works fine. I feel good because it's another one off the list and it was free to fix. However I still don't know how it works, perhaps somebody will explain - or is it not necessary to know!
