Tempted by Cayennne S
Discussion
I've become very tempted by a Cayenne S to use as my daily car.
Outside the opc network, one can get a well specc'd (air susp, 20" alloys, satnav and full leather) example with around 30k miles for around £28k, maybe a bit less. Dark colour with black leather does it for me.
Seems a good price to buy in at, maybe still losing money but wondered what opinions are as to seeing a sub £20k Cayenne S anytime soon.
I wonder if owners could chip in here and let me know if they have/don't have any item of spec. that they would really recommend over/different from the above.
Also, aside from a proper inspection and warranty, is there anything in particular to look for?
Thanks
Ajit
Black with Black looks great, wife prefers titanium, hence our Cayenne for sale on pistonheads, already have a 2006 titanium replacement identified.
PcmII with upgrade essential (upgrade allows post code entry and dynamic traffic guidence.
Our car is non air suspension, not been a problem due to the limited miles it covers.
Fuel consumption is high but nobody expects a petrol porsche suv to be frugal!
A poorly spec'd car will be very hard to sell for a true price, expect traders to ofer low £20's for a 2-3 year old s that has covered 35k miles! 3.2 has better long term residuals.
Standard Cayenne 3.2's have good residuals as people like myself buy the wife one, not bothered about the added grunt of the S or turbo. S and turbo better cars but demand is lower.
As with all porkers service history and warranty should be sought.
Build quality far superior to the range sport, sold ours after 1 year when things were no longer feeling as new!
Our Cayenne is solid as a rock, will stick to them as family cars as long as the bank balance permits.
Porsche never miss a trick, they build a jeep for the top end boys to race sports coupes with and basic jeeps that people can be happy to see their families pop down to the shops in!

I've driven a few X5s and they're good drivers. Only driven a Cayenne S briefly so not enough to form a view as to whats the better drive.
Not based on any logic i can identify but i don't like the image of the X5 but do like the image of the Cayenne! Maybe cos there's too many wide boys with X5s and big alloys around where we are.
Cheers

I recently 'Retired' my 996 C2 for the weekends and as much as I wanted to stay with a Porsche for the daily driver I've went with the 3.0 diesel X5 - the only problem is for how much they cost there are too many on the road to feel special - my 911 must only be worth half of what the X5 is, yet gets all the attention. Its fast enought, decent to drive, got all the kit and will hold its value better than a cayenne. Its what the mkII Cayenne should be looking to beat.
Be very careful with Colour and spec. Black, Silver and Titainium are the only colours that attract any interest when you want to sell. Tip,Sat/Nav and 19 or 20" rims are a must. Heated seats and interior ali pack really help as do Xenons, Multi function steering wheel and Bose/CD. If I had a Cayenne again, I would also opt for the air suspension as the standard suspension is rubbish if you are looking for a decent ride.
Cayenne S is the one to go ( will out perform an X5 4.6S all day) for as the standard model is under powered and has simialr MPG to the S. TT is very quick but second hand market is even narrower.
With a Standard Cayenne make sure it has the Air conditioning upgrade!
Depreciation is a Killer. I sold my Cayenne S last Feb. It was a Black 03/03 car with 10k worth of options and 27K miles. I was offered £27.5k - £29K trade. I understand the car is worth £24k today at best.
Most dealers I talk to are finding the Cayenne market very difficult and stock moves very slowly. Therefore, make sure you negotiate hard and be prepared for further depreciation when the new model arrives.
16mpg in town is okay - no worse than my Jag XJ8 which will be going (let it be said that its one of the best built cars i've ever had, 2001 car, have put 80k miles on it in 4 years and its now got 120k on it). Much better built than our E320, feels like the old mercs did in the 80s. Jag have really got their big cars right on the button.
Anyway, about Cayenne values. The S at say £25/26k private buy is a great 2nd had buy. When mk2 comes out, it may shave a bit more off but how far can they fall?
Maybe worth similar to what a premium exec saloon (5 series or E class) is worth at 3 yrs old (late teens, early 20s)

Lexus is japanese for reliability, had my last for 5 years 50K never spent a penny outside of servicingignoring the fact that you didnt have a hybrid for 5 years, great for you but i didnt say they were unreliable. the replacement cost of those computers/electrics/motors is going to be huge, WHEN they start to fail residuals are going to freefall - that was my only observation. i dont care either way
