Can I get a 993 for 26K to 30K
Discussion
Hi all,
I have sold my Fiat 20V Turbo and after much deliberation I have decided to search high and low for a late 993 instead of a Boxster.
My questions are :
1) Will I be able to get a good RHD 993 for between 26 and 30K? What sort of mileage etc?
2) What should I be looking for with a 993 in the classifieds?
3) Has anyone any dealings with porsche 'specialists' Portiacraft or Cridfords of Surrey as they appear to have some 993's which look good?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Foxy

Hi all,

Hello, good afternoon and welcome,
My questions are :
1) Will I be able to get a good RHD 993 for between 26 and 30K? What sort of mileage etc?
In theory, yes. Mileage is likely to be 50k plus, but any less and it will have been underused anyway. Condition is far more important than mileage, but be careful above 80k for resale. Make sure you get a purchase inspected by someone who knows their stuff, ie respected OPC or independent like JZ Machtech.
2) What should I be looking for with a 993 in the classifieds?
I would suggest you look at a post '95 C2, as these had some of the earlier bugs sorted out. Main thing is to get it inspected and use your gut instinct re condition and how cherished it is.
3) Has anyone any dealings with porsche 'specialists' Portiacraft or Cridfords of Surrey as they appear to have some 993's which look good?
Not sure. Cridfords rings a bell, but not sure why. Some people may pipe up.
Good choice!
But i will say this:
If you looked at LHD as well you could save yourself some money or get a newer/lower mileage car.
As i have said on numerous occasions, i actually prefer the pedals and steering on left hook 911s.
If you do decide to go for left hook i can say that whilst there are some disadvantages (ticket machine at the car park) there are also advantages (looking down the left of the vehicle in front before overtaking).
For me the driving position and steering/pedal relationship make it a no brainer, but that's just me.
Drive both, tell us what you think!
Whatever happens, welcome to 993 ownership. You WON'T be disappointed.

I have bought several cars from Jonathan at Cridfords over the last 15 years. I am 400 miles away from him, but was sufficiently happy to keep going back. A couple of cars I have had from him were bought on descrption (unseen by me) and sent up to me. I was not disappointed by any of them. I have no doubt he will have fallen out with some customers, but most places do - I have no hesitation in recommending him as an honest, knowledgeable and thoroughly decent guy.
Foxy, welcome.
I would say that with the 993, so long as it's got a comprehensive history and you've had it 'checked out' by 'an expert' you simply cannot go wrong. Mileage is rarely an issue.
Verysideways is correct; custody of the 993 is akin to supping from the chalice containing the elixir of automotive life and familiarisation is like roaming some eternal wine cellar, discovering one fine bouquet after another.
Having said that, I'm sure Greg, Don & Co can argue with similar passion for the cause of a 3.2 mid-engined approach, especially as the inductive raspo-orgasm crescendos at 7000rpm in one of their chosen steeds...
I'm afraid you really can't lose. Marvellous.

Mrsd, you misunderstand. This is derestrictor sober. Goodness knows what he's like when he's had a skinful, but we'll find out the night before Silverstone, eh, Don and Greg?

Left hooker's no problem on UK roads IMHO. Porsche's pedal set up makes a lot more sense on an LHD car also. Pain in the @rse (which is something I know a lot about ATM) at toll booths and multi storeys but otherwise not a problem. The only time it's ever really annoyed me is at the Dartford Bridge (yeuch) where you have to join the queue of Spanish lorry drivers who have to stop... get out... check the tires... argue with the chap in the booth... light a fag... get back in... pi55 about for five minutes... and then pull straight across three lanes of traffic without using the mirrors
If you have a very nervy passenger it can be a pain, because they'll see the traffic bearing down on them, but if they were on the left they'd just be moaning about the proximity of hedges, walls etc. so it might be worth trying one first with your better half in the car if applicable.

At the risk of having various rotten veg. slung at me by the 993 mafia..... Don't forget the BoxterS I know it doesn't have quite the same macho image but it is a fabulously accomplished car, I think it's the best value in the Porker range...test drive one B4 U buy a 993 he says ducking to miss a flying tomato !! LHD (more insurance, uncertain history etc etc) cheaper to buy but cheaper to sell as well, so what's the point it's all about what a car looses in value.

LHD not more insurance. Not uncertain history in all cases. Cheaper to buy and sell, but if you save four buying and sell for four less than a RHD model then what have you lost?
You will have gained the better driving experience though (the only way to improve on perfection is to sit on the side Butzi wanted you to).
As i recently quoted from Autocar:
"The only problem is, once you've owned a 993, nothing else will do."
