What is the secret to getting at the internals of the electrically adjustable, heated mirrors as found on 993s?

I need to get to the gubbins to do some fettling, and so far haven't been very brave with my pushing, prodding and persuading.

You can remove the glass by accessing a small hole at the bottom of the mirror housing. If you insert a thin screwdriver in there, you will need to push the toothed cog (I'm not sure which way, but it will only go one way) either towards or away from the door. Make sure you hold the mirror with one hand whilst doing this!
Once you have the mirror out, you can get to the motors. The internals come out with three Philips screws.
Refitting is the reversal of removal. You will understand how the mirror is fixed once you look at it.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the advice both here and by email: everything was just as sidned described.

Additionally I found that the whole mirror assembly can be removed from the door by taking out the two allen-headed bolts that go through the 'foot' of the housing - one between the inner edge of the mirror and the door and the second accessed by rotating the mirror. The bracket to which the bolts are screwed is captive inside the door, so no worries about it dropping when the bolts are removed.

thumbup Mirror now successfully fettled and back in full working order.
