I have a problem getting a smooth transition from 1st to 2nd gear when pulling off briskly from stand still in my manual 997tt. The torque is so strong that I find it difficult to find the right point to release the clutch - instead of a smooth acceleration the car (only sometimes if I don't concentrate) jumps ahead - is there a trick or do I need some driver training.

Clorenzen - I do not own a 997tt - but if it is any use to you I used to find this very difficult to do in my 996tt... I would imagine the way to achieve stunning 0-xxx times is to be very brutal with the car. Something that I did not want to do with my own car.

Whilst being semi-brutal with the car on pull-away I found the car to have stunning off the line performance.

Hopefully someone will have the answer.

Try setting off in second, you get more control over the clutch / power delivery, first gear is a waste of time, makes the who experience desparate.

I have the same issue with my 997s manual, no mater how much i try, the change up from 1st, whether gentle, brutal, or gradual clutch action, or sudden release clutch action, the car slightly shudders on the change. What is the technique for a smooth change in normal everyday driving please?

I've found the best way to get a smooth change in my 997 S or my girlfriends Cayman S is to follow a 1-2-3 sequence in your head. As you count 1 lift off the throttle, depress the clutch and go from 1st to neutral. On 2 select 2nd gear and on 3 release the clutch and start to feed the power back on gently just as you feel the clutch start to release. Once you have fully released the clutch you can apply full throttle then repeat the process as you go up the box. It makes for smooth and swift progress.

Interesting..... perhaps this would work in a 993tt too?

OK guys - I am happy that I am not the only one around here that has the same "problem". I will try the start in 2nd and see whether that helps and for the one who suggests I try a 430F1 I can say that I am fortunate enough to have another car with the one of the smoothest autoboxes with paddleshift in the business so I do not need to go there.

I had a 993TT for 5 years and i never managed a reliable smooth 1st to 2nd, it would happen as a fluke and i would be rather chuffed but never managed to repeat it on demand.

You obviously use the clutch more setting off in second but believe it or not thats what Porsche recommend !

1st gear being a scrawler gear for city traffic and uphill starts, i guess
