Picked up my 996 (99/T - LHD)a few weeks ago with the optional PCM. I decided to put my SIM card in the phone slot only to discover that this only accepts Vodaphone/Cellnet. My SIM is T-Mobile and don't fancy changing numbers. Any idea if the phone can be unblocked for T-Mobile.

Are we talking about a visit to a "Sunday street traders" or can this be carried out at the OPC

The problem is that Vodafone and T-Mobile networks operate on different frequencies so the card will never work. The old solution would be to port your number over to Vodafone contract permitting.

Are you sure about this? I thought the networks were all the same, my brother has a Nokia with dual simcard, it operates on two different networks, I cannot remember which ones now.

I suggest that unblocking (about £10) is all thats needed, I think it can be done at a mobile phone service centre.

Vodafone and O2 operate of a different frequency than T-mobile and Orange BUT most handset manufacturers supply phones that will work on either networks to save costs. The real problem here as I see it is that the system provided by Porsche is only able to transmit on the Vodafone frequency therefore any other sim card will not work. Of course it is possible that the sim card has been locked so it will only work in the phone provided but this is unlikely.

It's the handset that can be locked, not the SIM card. Either the handset is locked to the "home" network (T-Mobile and Orange do this in the UK, Voda, O2 do not) or it is unlocked so that any SIM can be used in it.

The answer is that Voda/O2 use the 900Mhz GSM frequency and Orange/T-Mobile use 1800Mhz. If the handset is single band 900Mhz then it will never find the T-Mobile network.

Hope this helps.

basically, in my experience, ALL inbuilt phone systems work only in the 900 gHz(?) range, which means Cellnet and Vodaphone. Orange is an 1800(?) gHz network and so the phone won't work.

As said, in my experience ALL inbuilt car phones, ie. Mercedes Comand, BMW, Porsche, Volvo etc. etc. The Nokia car phone is 900 gHz. Only a new Motorola phone for retrofit (forgotten the model name) is dual band.

I stand corrected, and my brothers phone is 900/1800 capable.

a handy with a car kit is a different proposition. this has the capabilities that the handy has.

I'm talking about the pukka inbuilt phones. They are all single band.
